first one of the year

Got out and mowed the lawn for the first time this year yesterday on the warm windy March afternoon. While mowing out in the back yard, had a two and a half foot long water moccasin cutting across the backyard from where I had already mowed a few strips, ended up chopping it to bits, only about 30 yards from the pool and the swingset, was headed towards the house. Knew it was only a matter of time with this warm weather that they would be getting out.

Glad you were able to kill the snake William, sure am glad we don't have any harmful ones here. we usually don't get to cut the grass until mid may up here, but if the weather keeps up the way it's supposed to, it'll be long before that. It's 58 degrees here right now.

Re: first one of the year

thank you for killing it. that is just one less snake i have to worry about even though im a thousand miles away. i hate them dang things. when i was 5 and my cousin was 4 we were playin in the woods when we lived in louisiana. well he saw a snake and grabbed its tail. it was a huge cotton mouth. that was 14 years ago and ill never forget it. luckily we didnt get bit. it would have killed us for sure.

Re: first one of the year

We have northern Pacific rattlers here, but they are very habitat specific and not widespread. They don't bother me one bit and about mid April they'll be sunning themselves at their den entrances. Time to take a hike and get a few pictures. I'll be sure to post some for you. wink.gif

Re: first one of the year-and another

Yesterday afternoon killed a 4 footer. Really fat water moccasin even closer to the house headed away this time though. Was only aboout 15 yards off the back corner of the house. Went to wash my hands at the hydrant on the south side of the house late yesterday afternoon after greasing some fittings on the disc and happened to see the thing with its head up in the yard. Afraid it is going to be another bad year for them here. Lopped its head off with the garden hoe that luckily had on the side of the house.

Wrong-O!!

Ther are Mississauga rattlers in the upper part of the Ashtabula watershed area.

If you mean the eastern massasauga rattlesnake then your'e right. As I live in central Ohio I'd never heard of them but I looked it up on the ODNR website and it list them as a state endangered species, rarely seen. I should have said northwestern Ohio has no poisonous snakes, my bad. Have you ever seen one? If a fellow sportsman comes on here and says they are out there then I believe him. Well, except for that jdickey guy who believes in bigfoot. I still think he just goes to them functions to meet chicks.

My dumb on spelling. crazy.gif 30 lashes with the Tominator noodle. grin.gif

That's the same snake of which I speak. Never seen one with my own two eyes. But they do exist in PA up in the Pymatuning lake area....... 1/2 of which lies in Ohio. They are little buggers, I guess. Not like our timber rattlers or eastern d-backs. Still don't wanna sit on one. smirk.gif
