Scope Power?

Re: Scope Power?

It would be interesting to hear some of the reasons for these scope recommendations. I know everybody has their favorites, but exactly why do you choose the powers, makes and models that you do? What features do you like?

Re: Scope Power?

Lately my scope of choice has been 2.8-10 x 44 for my higher power rifles. I like the light gathering of the 44 mm objective, the field of view of the 2.8 power when carrying in the woods and the option of 10 power for long distance shooting.

I use a 6-24 x 44 on my varmit set ups but the targets are obviously smaller and often at longer distances away.

Also I use 3-9 x 40 on some guns as they have performed well for me but for the newer guns I have moved up to the 2.8-10.

Shotgun and muzzle loaders are topped off with 1.5-5 x 32. smile.gif

Re: Scope Power?

I like to see the target in detail. I use the scope to make my last second decisions on shoot or no shoot. When I had to follow antler restrictions, I used the magnification to examine the rack closely and to look at does heads to ensure it was not a button buck. I prefer the upper magnificatoin topping out around 14-16x. I shoot with both eyes open even using a scope so the higher mag on the low end does not limit my quick shooting at closer ranges.

Re: Scope Power?

I have a 6-24x on one of my custom 10/22s, a 6-18x on the other, a 6-20x44 on my 22 Mag, a 3-9x on my Rem pump, and a 3-9x on a Rem 510 Target Master. For a plinking gun, the 3-9 would be fine. Most 22 lr guns will not shoot MOA at 50 yards and you can keep that degree of accuracy with a 3-9. When I said I have little use for that scope, I was mainly pointing at the 32mm objective. I will not spend a dime on anything smaller than 40mm for a rifle. I prefer 44mm obj for all rifles.

Re: Scope Power?

The older you get, the more you will appreciate the larger light gathering objective scopes. BTW, you will never get any younger. If you intend to keep the rifle and scope for a long while, get as large a scope as you feel comfortable with. Trust me, you will grow into it!
