Guest beagleman
I recently acquired a Mossberg Silver Reserve .28ga off my father. Was just looking to see if anyone has one or what they think about it. The number one reason I acquired this gun was because my grandfather had a .28 and he lent it to my dad and I and I shot the dickens out of it. And shot it better than any other shotgun bar none. I scored my 2nd highest ever sporting clay total with it (a 78 please dont laugh I do it maybe 2-3 times a year). Took it on a small reserve pheasant hunt and only needed to use both barrels once and took 6 that day. I even went out and bought a MEC 600JR. for this gun. Then one day I found out my dad questioned my grandfather about selling the gun to a buddy. And it was gone before I had a chance to fart. My dad bought this one because he wanted a lighter gun then his IZH-27 EAA. And he actualy used this gun on every rabbit hunt after he bought it. But on a yearly company bird hunt in Georgia. He said it started firing both barrells at the same time. I personally am not to worried about that because he also told me that he had put almost 300rds out of it before even swabbing the barrels. And Ive always heard that if you clean a firearm properly it will solve alot of problems. Now I did not take any side plates off or anything but I sprayed her down and scrubbed her good. I dont look for this to be much of a issue and if it is we'll address that when we cross that bridge. Now I know alot of people say dont buy cheap O/U's or double's period. To save your money and buy something good. And I promise someday I will but right now I dont have the money, and I take what I can get. I just started a new job with a low entry starting rate but alot of promise in the future. I have a 1 year old son and my fiance and I are just starting off. So please, just give me your honest advice on the Mossberg and how it compaires to the Stoger, Spartan or EAA. Because the bottom line to me is that I have a 28 and this time its mine! AJ
Re: Mossberg Silver Reserve Only having 300 rounds through it between cleanings is nothing. Heck, my trap gun usually saw 1500 rounds between cleanings when I shot competitively. It should have nothing to do with the gun doubling. Doubling, both barrels going off at the same time, is a problem that a lot of cheap double guns can develop. Since the gun is less than 2 years old, I would send it back to Mossberg for repair. Strut10
Re: Mossberg Silver Reserve The Silver Reserve is a decent hunting gun for the money. I don't like the sounds of the doubling problem, though. I have not personally shot the S.R. But I have disassmbled one and been through it thataway. Don't expect it to live a long, happy life if you decide to shoot competitively with it. It is not built for that. I do own and shoot an Amantino Stoeger SxS 20 ga. It appears to be a slightly better built gun than the S.R. to my eye. But I don't see the Stoeger being anything more than a hunting gun. Not built for 1000's of rounds per year, year in...year out. I'd take AJ's advice and send that puppy back for a fixing.
