What squirrel dogs do...

I have had a couple people ask me just what a squirrel dogs do...well, a picture is worth 1,000 words!

The first picture is my 4 year old female, Clarks LA 'D' Hunter and the second is a 14 month old male out of our good male Liar and my dad's female Zoe.

The third picture is what some would call bragging...I say it isn't braggin' if you already did it... wink.gif This is myself, Liar, and the owner of Wicks Outdoor Works after winning the MO State Championship Coon Hunt and Combo Dog. Liar and I won the dog box as well there.

Hope you like em! laugh.gif

Re: What squirrel dogs do...

Have heard of people using feists for hunting squirrels. Around here, it would be pointless if the only goal is to tree them like a coon. These tree rats got so many outlets from tree to tree, by the time the dog was barking at them they might be three or four trees away.

Cool that you won though. Congratulations.

what keeps the squirrels from running tree to tree though? why would they stay there with dogs barking at them and a person walking up to shoot them? just curious i've never done it before that first dog is a really good looking dog.

I've often wondered this myself...who knows?? Like I said, they do timber out a lot of the time, especially the grey cat squirrels. The dogs just follow them until they hold a tree. Red fox squirrels don't hardly ever timber. The only thing I know is to hand out an open invitation...come hunt with us, then you can tell everyone what I'm tryin to say, but maybe in better words.

I know several people that use feists, but I coon hunt too and have heard too many horror stories of feists gettin killed by a big coon, so I stick with the bigger curs.
