How should I set my pins?

Hey everyone... I have 3 pins on my Cobra Sidewinder sight and I'm pulling 60#. The average shot that I am typically presented with is around 15-20 yards. I am thinking about setting my top pin at 20 yards, middle pin at 30 and bottom pin at 40. Are these good ranges to set them at or should I go with the usual 10, 20 & 30? If I go 20/30/40, the 20 yard pin will be good from like 5 - 20 yards right?

This basically holds true depending on your arrow weight, speed and your ability.

If you do have a different POI at less then 20 using a 20 yard pins its very small.

Still very lethal.

BTW that is how I set mine up...

Re: How should I set my pins?

On my new Drenalin I have the bottom pin set at 0-20 yards, and I plan on setting up the other two pins at 30 yards and 40 yards when I get a chance to shoot at those distances when it gets warmer out. I would say it all depends on your bow and weight of arrows like stated above. Basicly I would say set the bow to fit the way you want to shoot. Good luck

Re: How should I set my pins?

I just use 2 pins set at 25 and 35. Figure this covers me out to 40 yards with minimal chance of picking the wrong pin when the buck is in front of me.

I set mine up 20/30/40. I use the green pin for 20 as it means "go ahead and whack em'" smile.gif. I use the yellow pin for 30 cause it means "use a bit of caution, you better be sure." wink.gif Then ofcouse the red pin for "STOP, what are you thinking, everything better be perfect!!" shocked.gifsmile.gif

Re: How should I set my pins?

When I used to shoot a slower bow, I had 5 pins set at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. Even though I shot at 40 and 50, my groups just weren't saticfactory enough for me to be confident shooting that distance in the bush, and I didn't own a range finder, which made it more important to keep my shots between 0 and 30 in the bush.

Now I only have 2 pins...20 and 30. Gets the job done grin.gif

I have a yellow and green pin. I have always kept the yellow on top, because the yellow shows up the best in low light conditions, and at low light, it's a closer shot I'm going to be getting. wink.gif

green, red, green, red, green. grin.gif

i do this because the green always shows up first in the morning and last at the end of the day..

i set my sights for even numbers 20, 30, 40, 50, 60.

this is the way i have always done it so im used to looking at a 25 yard target and knowing where to hold my 20 to make a kill shot.

Robinhood is on to something here I recommend you pay attention.

Lots of bowhunters rifle hunt too. We sight our rifles in 1" high at a 100yds. This because if we do that it usually means at 200yds we don't have to worry about any hold over and still make a lethal hit. Also for many calibers such a set up will usually put the bullet dead nuts on at 25yds. Why so many bowhunters refuse to do that with their bows puzzles me.

You're going hunt with the bow not cut paper "X"s

Figure out what your maximum point blank range is for your set up. Set up a pin at five yards. Back up aim for the same point and see where it groups at 10yds. If it is within a 4in circle from the original group, back up to 20yds and shoot a group again. Keep going if you can. Pretty soon you'll figure out where you can set that pin and still hit within that circle at a maximum yardage. It's different for every bow and set up. This is how you find your most useful point of aim for that bow. For hunting that will be where you need to set your first pin.

I usually set a couple of pins at 10yd increments beyond the maximum first range pin. Most folks that's as far as you can possibly shoot. I put a label on my bow limb that tells me what the maximum range is on the first pin and where the second and third one are sighted in.

Lots of guys who shoot the pro circuit either hunt with a different bow that is sighted in for hunting or have an alternate set of sights they use for tourneyments or hunting.

In my experience, good on paper is a lot harder to hunt with.
