Guest SCRich
OK things are moving fast on the property since I last posted. Set up a trail cam and been droping about 50-100lbs of corn by hand on a 1.25 acre plot. In 4-5 days every SINGLE kernel is GONE! I have had some shots with 10 head of deer in one photograph, mostly small but some are almost ready. Problem. House will be ready to set in 3-4 weeks. Clearing and basement/foundation need to be done in the next week. This is a large pre-built home, not a trailer or mobile but a 5200sq ft. modular. Had a meet with a logger and I can get a OK ammount of cash for 2.5 acres clear cut and 40% thinning of 25 acres, it's real THICK in there. The logger want's to come in on Tuesday and in 3 days he should be done so my guy can come in pull the stumps from the homesite and start the basement. Well since he is paying cash for the timber. I was thinking clear cutting a truck wide path the entire 27.5 acre perimiter. No fencing, too dense woods and while cutting foot trails today with a brush saw it sounded like someone was shooting INSIDE of the property, it was loud. I stopped the saw pulled my .45 from my shoulder holster and let one rip into the hill next to me. NOT ONE SHOT WAS HEARD AFTER THAT! Someone was where they should NOT have been apparently and they got the message. I can't afford a few miles worth of hog wire fence and I don't want to keep deer out either. What can I do to make it clear to everyone to stay out but still allow the deer free roam? I have signs every 50 or so feet along the line but this whole county is covered in signs. I was thinking that I could probably do an electric fence with plastic "T" bars and several spools of wire. A 5 mile or so transformer I believe is less than $150. Yellow T bars should make it real clear to people to stay away along with a few signs. How will this affect my deer population ? Is it possible to do and not SCR#$ myself. I was thinking I could leave a few openings on each side post it well or even install a single pipe gate insulate it by burrying the wire in PVC under the gate so that deer can come through. If someone crosses the area there is no question of mal intent. Right now it's dense woods and none of the property around it has ever had any homes. Someone can very stupidly be shooting on land not thinking that anyone is there (even though THEY don't belong there) or just start hiking downrange from my shooting area and get hurt. Sorry for the long post but I am rushing here. I got to decide by Monday afternoon if it's worth it to have the entire perimiter cut. When they cut they don't leave the place in great shape. You can probably do an ATV but you will have stumps all over the place maybe several inches tall. It will probably take several years for me to cut the whole place to ground level and a lot of herbacide spray to keep the brush down and accelerate the rotting of the stump left. I shudder to think how much it would cost to have a backhoe come in and pull the stumps out and haul away. I got plenty of stumps dumped on the property already for critter housing! If fencing is a 100% stupid move for good hunting land I would probably not have the prerimiter cleared.
wtnhunt
Re: Can I fence my land and how ? jmho, an electric fence perimeter running in the woods would be a bad idea for several reasons. Post the property and get the warden involved.
Strut10
Re: Can I fence my land and how ? I'd think a couple hundred yellow signs should be enough to go "wall-to-wall" with them. I do over 2 miles of proprty line with less than that and it's PLENTY of coverage. But if you want "effect" that'll do it. If you want a physical barier, I'd just run one strand of electric fence wire (no need to electrify) just about waist high. I'd steeple it to line trees and use as few T-posts as possible. No mistaking if somebody crosses it. They know they did it. I'd be sure to tie brightly colored surveyor's tape to the wire every 25 feet or so to make sure the deer see it too. Ravin R10 man
Re: Can I fence my land and how ? fencing is not cheap and alot of work..and that will not keep people out unless you put up a 9 foot fence with razor wire..then you keep all things out.. you are going to have to endure this tresspassing problem for awhile, since people are used to going onto that land and it may take awhile to get the message across, I would have the line cut out, and then clear a trail, you can run the wheeler around to patrol it. That will give visability to see who is coming across when you are there.-
Guest Finn
Re: Can I fence my land and how ? What's your goal for this 27 acre plot? That's not alot of land and you'll need deer from other places to come through or you won't have any hunting luck. Fence is a pain in the rear to have around your area. You will always have to be fixing it and it won't really stop anyone...if it does, it will stop all deer movement, too. Don't let it drive you nuts that someone may walk on your land. Try find out who your neighbors are and get along with them. Shooting back at them doesn't seem to be the right answer. Good luck with the new home building. Welcome to Realtree. ky_deerhunter_77
Re: Can I fence my land and how ? A 4 foot fence won't stop a deer. The farm I hunt on has them very where for the cattle, and I've seen deer in every field. If it was me I would cut a four wheeler path and put the fence up. But a fence is like a scope, you get what you pay for .

The deer will duck under or jump over a single strand fence. Tresspassers will simply cut the fence and it becomes ineffective! You might better cut a trail and patrol your land. Have the first person you find on your posted property arrested and prosecuted. This will send the message you mean " STAY OFF " Word will travel fast! Above all, don't do anything foolish like setting traps etc. The liability is more than you would want to deal with. Good Luck, Lynn

No doubt if someone trespasses without any conscience they will also cut the wire. Would imagine that will just make for more frustration for you. QDMAworks4me
Re: Can I fence my land and how ? Hidden trail cams might be a god way to find out who is coming on your property, but make sure the neighbors don't see them or you putting them up or they might just steal those also. I would use this along with patroling the your land. That is why our 500 acres is left alone because we are always around at different times of the day and people know that.
