Bad Day

Have any of you ever had a day where you started thinking about what good you have done? I woke up today and started thinking "what have I ever done good?" I cant think of anything. Im proud of my little brother because of how amazing he did this hockey season. He scored 50 goals this season. My senior year I only had 80 total points! Nobody knows who I am, but they all know my brother and I am very happy for him. He is a good kid. And it made me think "Have I ever done anything like that?" No I really havent. I dont know if this is normal or not but its really bringing me down. It actually makes me feel like I wont do anything in the future either. Let alone want to to anything anymore. I do O.k. in school, Im decent at hockey, I was ok in baseball, and im mediocre at hunting. I know if I talked to my parents they would say that I have done some good things, but why wouldnt they say that? My parents always try to make me feel better but I know its because they dont like to see me sad. It Im sorry to bother you guys with this. Ill let you get back to your business.

Re: Bad Day

Hey man, chin up. I'm sure there's lots you have done.

I'm sure there's lots more you can do.

Were you ever there for a friend? Did you ever help your mom or dad, or brother?

I've done a lot of soul searching over the years after going through some health problems. I had the same feelings you had/have. I think it comes down to this: we are here for each other. Do what you can for others. People will remember and respect you for how you treat others. Glory fades, honesty, integrity, loyalty, and service to your fellow man is what counts.

Hang in there, you made my day better if that means anything to you. cool.gif

Great point Chris. wink.gif

We have a picture at our camp that's of a little boy on the bank of a lake just looking at the water. Under it the caption reads something like this "When I'm gone it won't matter how big of a bank account I have or what kind of car I drove but what will matter is if I was important in the life of at least one child."

Good food for thought there. wink.gif

Re: Bad Day

Have to agree with Chris an Al here Cody. Chin up, if you try to hard to think and wonder about what good you have done, you will likely just beat yourself down. That does you no good at all. Surely you have done things that you dont think about that have helped others.

Re: Bad Day

My friend, you were not put on this earth to be good at hockey, baseball, or hunting. These are things that we add to the presures of life. I have a few questions to ask.

Name the winner of the 72 masters?

Name the MVP in the 83 super bowl?

Name the winner of the 85 Daytona 500.

Name 3 people who have spent time with you and encouraged you?

It ain't what you do, it's who you are that leave an impact. I played golf with a friend the other day, he shot 102, I shot 74. He had as much fun as I did, and the pro shop didn't give me any money back at the end of the round for shooting 2 over par. Please don't judge yourself by what you have done, Christ died so we don't have to play that game anymore.

Chin up.

Re: Bad Day

Here are a few good things I learned about you in this post:

1) You are honest. Some people aren't honest enough with themselves to have self-realization.

2) You are corageous to share such thoughts with others - I suspect you have a good "emotional IQ".

3) You are humble and not puffed up with pride. Some people choose to inflate their status and accomplishments so others will notice them.

4) You see good things in other people - your brother in this case.

To add to jbeck's closing sentence, don't judge yourself by comparing yourself to others either - you are your own unique person.

Keep your head up. In the words of Clebe McClary (a great man and severely wounded Viet Nam vet and author of "Living Proof") - FIDO it....

Hey thanks guys....I appreciate your words....i really do. And I realized that If i want to do something amazing I still have 2 years left of college hockey. I walked on as a freshman and started for a ACHA Division 1 team so I guess there is something to be proud about I guess. Anyways, thanks again for your kind words....they are greatly appreciated.

Very well said! Just keep your head up and don't get yourself down! I promise there are people out there that know you and love you and respect you! More than likely there are peoples lives that you have touched that you don't even realize and may never know that you did it! That is the good thing about it!

Keep your head up and keep on living!

God bless!

Re: Bad Day

Sports are important, especially as a young person. I played sports through college and it was good for me. That has been a few years, and I realize that the things I do that mean the most at the end of the day aren't about me. Like the other guys have said, it's about serving others, and shining a little of God's love on someone.

Things you can do to make you feel like a million bucks and make a difference in the world include volunteering for an organization that serves others. Soup kitchens or homeless shelters or churches that provide for the poor, homeless, battered women. Any youth organization would love to have a guy like you around to be a good example to a kid that needs one. You may be a pretty good college hockey player, but to a kid, you would be better than Wayne Gretzky and Jaromir Jagr combined because you are there and showing interest in them. Old age homes are the same way, go there one afternoon and ask if you could sit and talk with some of the residents. A few will be bitter old people, but many are super nice and have PHENOMENAL stories to tell from a lifetime of living. They have a lot of wisdom and insight to pass on to anyone who will listen.

Witnessing for Christ and spreading the Gospel is veryu fulfilling, too, and can be worked into all of the above.

Oh, and just because you play hockey does not mean that you can't give blood in the regular way too. That is very important community service.

You are young, and can do great things, so get to it, bud!

Re: Bad Day

did you ever think that your little brother might not be the hockey player he is without watching you first? im sure you have been there for your brother and he might not be the person he is now without you being in his life. so just look at it that way. of course people are always goin to be critical of themselves because they truly cant see what they have done or the good they have done like others see them.

Dude, do you realize how many people can't make a college hockey team?

Did your brother get real good by himself, or did you help him learn and get better?

I'm not near as book smart as either of my brothers....but neither has ever killed a deer with a bow.....ha!! grin.gif

well said Chris.

woodsman2230, i bet you have done tons of things to help others, and you didn't realize you were helping them. listening to someones problems, calling someone just to say hello...what may seem like an everyday thing or something small...could mean the world to someone else...even just a friendly "hello" as you pass someone in a grocery store. you don't have to be famous, or have a ton of people know who you are to make a difference in the world. you just have to be a good person and live everyday the best that you can.

Re: Bad Day

I would like to say something really intelligent here, but in this case Winston Churchill said it best in two quotes:

"Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb."

and

"There comes a special moment in everyone's life, a moment for which that person was born. That special opportunity, when he seizes it, will fulfill his mission - a mission for which he is uniquely qualified. In that moment, he finds his greatness. It is his finest hour."

The point? Your finest hour probably hasn't arrived yet. You sound like you are a great kid and haven't given your parents trouble, that's an accomplishment. You surely have done more than you think but always be looking for that next great chance to leave a mark on this world (no, not a SKID MARK). laugh.gif

You are probably at a cross roads or nearing a transition that always seems to make people think a lot.

Re: Bad Day

i don't see what any sport has to do with the "what good have i done" question. if you want to be a hero, take a kid hunting. read a book to folks at the old floks home. be a "big brother". lead a boy scout troop. mow some old floks lawn, or shovel their snow. this is what hero's do. not everyone is great at sports, or great at this, or great at that. and that is no problem. just be you, help folks, and go to church. those are the unsung heros.

Re: Bad Day

Like others have said, your brother probably wouldn't be as good as he is without looking up to you. So, that in it's own is something great that you've done. If you don't think he looks up to you, you might be crazy.

I may be getting a little off track, but I'm not too much older than you and I went through the same thing in my early 20's. Knew what I wanted to do but didn't know how to get there until I finally said, I'm not going to let someone decide my life for me, I'm am going to put it all out on the table and let them know that I want. And now I'm 27 and I do for a living what I wanted to and I love it.

"When somebody throws you a curve, you gotta learn to swerve".

I may have gotten off-track, but I know what you're going through.

Re: Bad Day

Your kind words and advice are greatly appreciated. The only reason I am so torn up is that hockey is all i know. I have been playing almost everyday since I was 5. I have done some pretty good things while I was playing. I have a lot of trophies and stuff and socred a couple game winning goals. Also we wont the Pennsylvania State championship when I was in 10th grade but I really dont feel like part of that team because I didnt play a whole lot. (I kinda got screwed by the fact that I had 8 juniors and 6 seniors ahead of me) I am pretty proud of the fact that last year when I was a freshman in college the coaches thought I was good enough to start games. And my friends at college think that I can really help the team. And I always try to do the best that I can for them. I really dont know why I feel this way. Its really annoying for lack of a better word.

But I always try to be there for people when they need me to. My friends know that I am always there to listen to them no matter what I am doing and what they want to talk about. My friends and family are all I have now for the most part. I am actually trying to get my best friend his first turkey this season and I am trying to get it on film so that he can remember exactly everything that happened for the rest of his life. I took him turkey hunting for the first time last season and now he is hooked. Its just tough to get over something that I have been doing almost everyday since I was 5. Im now 20. And in my defense I was one of 2 seniors on my team with 90% of my teamates were sophomores and freshman when I played and my brother had 8 seniors. I dont want to sounds jelous because I love my brother to death and I couldnt be more proud of him right now. And whenever he needs help with anything, hockey, school whatever the problem is I will always help him. And I hope that he knows that.

I know this is a lot for me to drop in you guys but I almost feel like I have nobody else I can talk to. Im sorry if Im wasting anyone's time. I want to thank you all for taking the time to read this post. It has helped me fell a little better. Thanks again.

Chris

Re: Bad Day

If I knew you better, I could without a doubt, name at least five things that you've done and should be proud of. But since I don't, just ask around and you'll see what others see. Your just blinding yourself right now. Open up the tunnel and look around. You are a great person and God has plans for you. Much of what He has planned, has already happened and you were a direct part of it.

Re: Bad Day

Not wasting our time at all, and I understand.

You are nearing the end of your hockey career and college it sounds like, most people start asking themselves these questions.

Don't take youself too seriously and start looking ahead to your career and settling down and those things. Be the best you can, no one asks for anything else.
