I don't want to hijack the thread, if you think I need to start a new one let me know. It seems that most of the posters here are knowledgeable on "heavy metal". I got in over my head I think on my 27.5 acres. I had 3 acres logged, and about another 23-24 acres thinned 40%. The equipment that went in there were CASE 325's if you have ever seen them the tires are larger than my 2500 Diesel!

Well now I got a REAL mess on my hands, probably several tons of waste material I got to clean up and some 15ft+ wide trails to maintain on hilly/rolling/steep land. All in all I think it's going to come out WAY COOL but it's going to cost me.

The wife agrees that it looks like a tractor is going to be necessary. I have never driven one let alone owned one. Where do I start ? I know for sure I will need 4WD, think I will need a front loader and I really want a backhoe on it so I can run electrical and water to other parts of the property and dig up stumps.

I don't want to buy a MONSTER but I don't want to buy something that will be too small. What do I do and where do I start ?

Re: New Food Plot Toy!

Rich, I replied in your other thread. Lot of good tractors out there. Personally I like kubota tractors and own two of them, one a mid sized utility, and the other a compact I bought last year at the end of the summer. Typically you can get better deals on tractors at the end of the summer. If you are looking at a new tractor, dont be afraid to shop around and attempt to get dealers down on their prices.

With whatever you get, a good mid sized 4 wd tractor with a loader will push up trees and you would be surprised with what you can do with one. Would suggest looking for something above 45 hp.

Re: New Food Plot Toy!

Depends on exactly what you want to do with a tractor. A 4 - WD tractor is very useful, however it is not intended to be a Bulldozer. If you have large trees to dig up you aren't going to do it with even a large farm tractor without damaging it. They aren't made for this purpose. Some have heavy duty looking loaders and buckets but are intended for lifting and moving material. They aren't really designed to dig with to any extent or drive up against a tree to try to move it. The buckets and the arms just won't take the abuse. I've seen many a heavy duty backhoe with bent loader arms which were a result of this abuse.

If you are going to try to clear land a dozer is the best option. It must also be equipped with ROPS, a good roof, side screen protection and sweeps which go from the front of the engine hood to the top of the cab area to protect you from falling trees, limbs and dead falls.

If you don't have any experience operating equipment you are better off letting a pro. do it.

Working in the woods is very dangerous even to a pro. Safety first!

Re: New Food Plot Toy!

I have to agree with LETMGROW. I have used my front end loader on a few trees but they were very small trees or cedar trees which are very easy to push over (soft wood and shallow soft root systems). If you plan on getting a dozer or renting one I'd be sure to first let the person know what you plan doing with it and also get some get instructions on how to operate one. Farming is the most dangerous work a person can do and if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing with heavy farming machinery then get someone who does--no need getting hurt.

Next tiem you have someone log, make sure in your contract you have a stipulation in there that they will fix the road when they leave. Any time we have someone log our woods we make sure that is in the contract. You might want to just hire someone to come in and fix your roads and take out your stumps and then buy your self a tractor to clean up the little stuff. JMO. Good luck
