woodsman2230
Well this morning I went and sat at a listening area where I am able to hunt. I got to the spot about 6:30 and immediately I could hear hens yelping and cutting. GGGGOOOOOOBBBBBBBLLLLEEEEEE!! There were 8 turkeys gobbling on the roost. They even doubled and one triple gobbled up there. At about 6:50 they started to pitch out into this field. Here is the final count: 30 hens 8 Jakes and 1 big old longbeard. I watched the longbeard in the field for a good 45 minutes with my binos. Since the time he flew down until 7:45 he bred 3 hens. Right there in front of me. That is the first time I have ever seen a turkey do that other than in a video. All of the turkeys were starting to make their way towards the road. As soon as they crossed I made my way up to them and got a close up look of that longbeard. He was about 10 steps. The hens got nervous and started yelping to assemble the rest of the group abd that longbeard let out the loudest, throaty, most raspy gobble I ever heard. He gobbled about 7 times. All at about 10 steps from my car. It was neat. From what I saw of him it looked like he had about a 11" beard and about 1" to 1 1/4" spurs. And my weight guess would be over 20lbs. I then went to my backup spot around 8 am. As soon as I got there a crow sounded off across the road and sure enough about 3 or so gobblers sounded off on a ridge. I could follow where they were going because it seemed like they would gobble about every 20 steps. At one point I thought I was going to get a look at them. But I couldnt see them. Anyways, it was a good morning and I was just happy to get out there and hear them.
