conduit or not-electricians opinions-others

Going to pull 120 to my tractor shed/horse stalls probably this weekend if I get a chance to, so I can move the fence charger out there from the garage and tie in a few lights. Picked up some direct burial wire, and have considered laying it 16-18 inches deep without putting it in conduit, but really am a bit skeptical about doint that, have never run underground lines without conduit even the direct burial wire. Dont think if I go that deep there would a chance of it getting hit, but then again, our dog does dig like crazy, and the moles in the yard tunnel everywhere and when they do they push up stuff. It is only about 100 feet from the garage to the shed so the conduit for the run would cost less than $15, and really would not be that much more trouble.

Any opinions, suggestions?

If it was me, I would for sure put it in the gray plastic conduit. We have trouble with moles around here and they are always digging and chewing into something. Its some good added protection. I live in the country, so pretty much can do what I want. I've got lines and stuff buied all over my place running to different stuff, sheds, etc. When I 1st moved on this property I had good intentions of making a map of where all my stuff I buried was, but ended up not doing it. I thought, I know where everything is anyways, no need. Well here is a recent story from a few weeks ago.

I was digging up a anvil, and metal table I had buried by an old shop building, going to move it up by my new shop. I was digging down with the post hole diggers and hit a tree root. I smacked it acouple more times trying to cut it, when it fianally dawned on me I didn't have any trees near by. Yep.. it was my copper line running to my propane tank. Amazing how that copper looks like a tree root after its been in the ground for several years.

I'd definately bury it in the PVC conduit. Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.......

Gator is right on this one!! DO NOT just drop it in the ground! You will have nothing but headaches!!

Conduit (grey plastic type). Make it oversized 1-1/2 or 2" and pull a string or two with the wires. That way you'll have a puller when you determine that you wnat something else out there too. (tv, phone, cable, etc)

Even direct bury cable has installation specifications that must be met. Such things as a sand encasement and concrete overlay to name just two. You can't just stick it in the ground.

Check out the National Electric Code (NEC) to find out the particulars.

I'd vote for the conduit for your installation too.

If it was me, I would take # 6 out to the shed. That will give you 50 amps. Why run just 110 ? I would run 240 out-----That way it's there if you ever need it. I would run 1 1/2 PVC, 3 #6's to a small panel----8 to 12 circuits----you will have to drive a ground rod to establish your ground. The panel will need a main breaker---50 amps.

You can't run phone, tv cable etc in the same pipe as the electric wire. You can use the same ditch but not the same pipe. I would put a spare 1" PVC pipe in for that. CB

Just reread your post----You already have the wire? What did you buy 12/2 or 10/2 UF ? You can bury that, it will be a son of a gun to pull it thru a conduit. If you already have the wire----I would bury it 12" to 16" deep & then also put in a spare PVC wire----for the future. 12/2 or 10/2 will only give you 110 volt. It has 3 wires----a hot, neutral & a bare ground. If you bought 12/3 or 10/3 that will give you 120/240volt. You'll need a disconnect means for the shed. If you're run UF to the shed a simple light swicth would work-----run your wire to the outside of the shed, put a bell box there with your swith----then to the recps & light.

Re: conduit or not-electricians opinions-others

Thanks for the suggestions guys. This is just an open shed with stalls.

Pretty well knew I would run it in conduit, really dont know why I asked, maybe wondered why anyone would run it without. Would have picked up the conduit yesterday, had I been in my truck. Will only be running a few lights and probably two outlets for the fence charger and whatever I might need out there.

Pulling 12/2 direct burial with a ground, will run a 15 amp breaker from the box in my garage which is about 100 feet away. Think the 15 amp will be more than enough to handle the fence charger and a couple lights.

Have the old lincoln welder in the garage and have an additional 20 or so feet of wire coiled up behind it so I can pull it out of the garage if needed to reach what I am working on. Anything that is that close, I can get it to the garage, so pulling a set of #6 wires is not going to happen. I pulled what I needed to the garage when I built it so I could do what I need from there.

Would not run a phone line out there, the cordless reaches out there easily, could not run it in the same pipe if I wanted to anyways due to noise.
