TreeWalker
When you're either in your car or in your Church, which do you rather worship and give praise with....contemporary Christian music or Hymns ?? The reason I ask, is our church is realtively young as far as age structure goes, but we still have several older couples and it's been interesting to note the difference in music preferences........to me, I could sing the new Christian stuff all day long....I can really get fired up, and it can also revive me at the same time. Don't get me wrong, Hymns to me still have a very important place, but in that same breathe, thats kind of what i was getting at....they have a place and a time...they seem to garner more respect and in our church anyways, it is a significant event when hymns are sung......Easter, Christmas, Funerals, Weddings...etc... So what's it like where you are at ??
buckee
Re: Worship Music I enjoy both. The bible says to make a joyful "Noise" unto the Lord, he didn't say it had to be music, as defined by our personal preference I admit that some sounds more like noise to me, but as long as it praises him, it's OK with me. In the same token, some old hymns can put me to sleep
preacherman
Re: Worship Music we sing mostly traditional hymns at our church, with a little mix. Oddly enough, this is a discussion that we are having right now with our board as to what to do.
Jeramie
Re: Worship Music "Give me that old time religion, give me that old time religion, if it was good enough for Daniel, its good enough for me..... " Actually I like the new stuff too but Im a BIG fan of Southern Gospel. I play the guitar in our Choir and I love to play those old Pentecostal hymns. The new stuff is a blast too but man the Spirit really moves when everyone gets into some of those old Hymns!
drkillemquick
Re: Worship Music We have different worship leaders for music in our church so one Sunday it will be older more traditional music, and the next much more contempory. My fiance is a worship leader and her music has a tendency to lead towards the newer stuff, with drums and quitars at the front of the church, while I really prefer the older music. HarvDog
Re: Worship Music I enjoy the contemporary praise and worship music with some hymns thrown in here and there. Most of my P&W happens in my car or at home lately because the worship leader at our church basically repeats almost all of the same songs every week. Guest Andrea
Re: Worship Music I've seen more and more churches start out with what they call "praise teams" that sing a few contemporary songs during Sunday morning services. Then gradually they take over and there's not even a choir anymore. And the singing takes up over an hour or so of the service. Sure, I love contemporary music and can jam with the best of them....but I also love the hymns I was raised on and nowadays I find that very few churches include them in their services anymore. Very sad....... Few of my all-time favorites: 1. Blessed Assurance 2. Old Rugged Cross 3. Victory In Jesus 4. Just As I Am 5. Sweet Sweet Spirit

unioncountyslayer
Re: Worship Music We sing contemporary worship music at our church. That is one of the things that drew me to it. I grew up in a church that sang nothing but hymns. I don't think that there is anything wrong with hymns, we actually sing a few at our church, just different arrangments. I've never been a big fan of hymns (I respect the words and reverence of them, honestly they just put me to sleep). I guess in a sentence, hymns are fine for some, just not me. Give me some Tomlin, Crowder, Third Day, etc.
Ravin R10 man
Re: Worship Music Well Steve some od these contemporary groups got the "noise" thing down all right...what i cant stand is the repeating of a chorus..I got it the first time!! I too like the old hyms too..but I can live with a mix, which is what our church does. I know we are going too long when the "white hair group" starts to sit down during worship music..LOL

johnf
Re: Worship Music There was a time that some churches wanted to ban "Amazing Grace" and "Just a closer Walk with Thee" because they were too worldly. Our church is very versitile in it's songs of worship. We go from Handle to Petra and everything in between. I like it that way. One minute you hear styles from old time gospel, barbershop, then jazz, R&B rock and the next thing might be "just as I am?

Guest HoppeMan
Re: Worship Music At our church it's strictly traditional hymns. Amazing Grace, Arise my Soul Arise, are my favorites. As for me, I'd feel kinda weird singing the Christian contemporary songs versus hymns in a church, just never done it As for the contemporary songs, I actually don't listen much to them. Jeremy Camp, David Crowder (Gotta love him!!) are my favorites. Take care, Nathan
unioncountyslayer
Re: Worship Music Here's something to ponder. When those of you that sing only hymns in church, what do you tune the radio to when you get in your car after leaving church. I bet at least 99.9 percent of you don't crank up How Great Thou Art or Amazing Grace. Again, I'm not bashing hymns, I just think it's funny that so many churches are so set on singing hymns only but the only time they ever sing along or listen to them is in the pew. I guess I look at things from a non-believers point of view. I feel like those that we should be reaching out to will be much more comfortable and may even sing along with Contemporary Worship music in Church. Pastors these days, even in these hymn singing churches don't preach with the same vocabulary as preachers of the past did. If the method can change from the pulpit, why not from the music? The method is not sacred, only the message.
MadHuntinPastor
Re: Worship Music Many of the hymns are valuable and teach as you sing them. Deep in theology, but Not very easy to sing however. Chorus have a great beat, but some of them are very surface / or "me" oriented. Meaning instead of being about God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, the cross, the blood........ They concentrate on our feelings. (please note my effort to not totally generalize. Many great examples to contradict both statements above) As a worship leader who is a senior pastor, I always try to include good hymns as much as possible. I also try to contemporize the music. No hymnals!! Many unchurched people don't even realize that it is a hymn they are singing. As far as chorus' go......make sure it has a good message and isn't just the next cool song. Music is what is driving us for generations. Records, 8traks, cassettes, cd's, ipods. Music moves us and moves the world. As a church we can't turn a deaf ear to this in the name of history. Music to the hymns was cutting edge when many of them were written. The church used to be the trend setter for music in the world. Unfortunately it now seems that the church is trying to keep up with the world. We should all challenge ourselves to be able to worship God no matter our circumstances or surroundings. King David was the prime example who puts us to shame. No matter the song, no matter the situation our God is to be praised!! Period! Shame on us if we let our personal opinions stand in our way of His Worship. One underlying theme here in this thread.....WE ALL LOVE TO PRAISE HIM!!!!! If we don't praise Him the rocks will cry out.
