Doc
Re: Grannis got in [ QUOTE ] I am going to cross my fingers that he will surprise us and will not do the things that he has in the past. [/ QUOTE ] It's a real shame that we have been reduced to "hoping" and crossing our fingers that some miracle will shape the future of NYS game management and hunting and trapping regulations in a positive fashion. As it turns out, the NYS hunting sportsmen's community and their organizations have been pretty much stripped of all effectiveness when it comes to political strength. As far as I know, all statewide organizations except one took a neutral stance on the Grannis nomination. This was pretty much like saying "we don't care". As it turns out many of these organizations apparently have hamstrung themselves with a tax designation and rule structure that forbids them from taking public positions on political matters. From my point of view, that makes them all completely impotent when it comes to the shaping of laws and policies regarding hunting trapping and fishing. Any gains that they might be able to affect rely on going hat-in-hand to the powers that be and hoping that they might get lucky enough to find a friendly or sympathetic ear. That has worked to some extent in the past, but now there is no friendly or sympathetic ear. Now there are only those in power who have nothing but disdain for our activities. I doubt that such humble tactics will have much of a positive effect anymore. Let's face it, we can cross our fingers all we want, but sportsmen have just taken a severe hit in this state. Our fish and game management is now in the hands of the darling of the animal rights organizations and we can blame it on apathy and ineffectual hunting, fishing and trapping organizations. Doc
Re: Grannis got in I remember reading about the troubles that New Jersey hunters were having with their anti-hunting governor (especially the bear hunts) and thinking that at least the pinko state of New York still had organizations and a state administration that would not allow such fiascos to take place. Now I think New York is about to undergo an anti-hunter, anti trapper campaign that will make New Jersey look like the hunting capital of the world. Now that our new governor has installed his animal rights shill as commissioner of the DEC, he can further inflict damage on hunting and work toward the elimination of most publicly accepted reason for private gun ownership. The next situation will be the onslaught of gun laws that surely are on their way. Unfortunately, the relatively easy success of this anti-sportsmen nomination shows that we are completely powerless in this state to prevent any moves that this new governor wishes to make in those directions. Adjam5
Re: Grannis got in When I read this news in the local paper on April1st, I was hoping it was a joke, but soon enough I was sick to my stomach. Feeling totally powerless. I wrote letters, made phone calls, told everyone I know about what a POS this guy Grannis is and it did nothing. This could be the start of the DEMISE of the NYS sportsman. Teach your children well folks. A Wolf in sheeps clothing is what this guy is. Our rights are in BIG TIME jepoardy. A Clintonista is what he is... Doc
Re: Grannis got in This whole nomination has brought a pretty clear vision of what hunting's future is, and exactly how powerless we are to change it. It has also pointed out just how inneffective our NYS hunting advocacy groups that many of us belong to, really are. Worse yet, it has exposed this position of weakness to the enemies of hunting, fishing and trapping which is sure to embolden them in future attacks on our outdoor sports. Almost all of them took a position of neutrality on the nomination issue. Can you imagine that?.....pro-hunting groups being NEUTRAL on the Grannis nomination? That almost sounds like a welcome mat for this staunch animal rights commissioner. Yes, they all had their little excuses and reasons for their stance, but the bottom line is that none of them are the least bit effective at protecting any of our hunting, trapping and fishing rights. So for those of us that felt comfortable because we have organizations that tell us they are there to protect our rights..........DON'T!!! It sickens me that these groups cowarded in a corner. What makes it worse is that these groups, take NYB for example, will do nothing but whine when Grannis sides in favor of crossbows or decides to shorten their season. They had their chance to oust this guy and they blew it.

Adjam5
Re: Grannis got in [ QUOTE ] No thank you on the crossguns! [/ QUOTE ] Joe we have bigger fish to fry besides crossguns now that Grannis is in office. Ranger, I am member of NYB and it was bothering me, big time; that they did not take a stance on Grannis. But short of God on our side, I don't think it would have made a bit of difference. The democrap wave is gaining speed and this is ALL part of the dismantling of the Sportsman. I hope in EVERY way to be wrong about Grannis, that could only mean good for NYS hunters.
Doc
Re: Grannis got in Actually, it might have been interesting if these groups had taken an active role in the opposition of Grannis. Had there been a mailing campaign to alert all members of each of these groups and if there had been an effort to mobilize the entire sportsman's community, and done right, there is no telling just how powerful an impact they might have had. No, we don't even come close to being a majority of voters, but if we could just once stand up and display ourselves as a single minded, unified, portion of the voting population, I'm sure that it would show a voting block that should not be ignored. It is amazing how much attention you can get when you are viewed as a dedicated, organized, enthusiastic and determined segment of the population, and you don't even have to have that high a percentage to be effective. However, the message we sent to all the politicians is just exactly the opposite. The stance of neutrality speaks volumes for our actual position of impotence. In this case, it actually did more harm to have organizations that declared neutrality, than if we had had no organizations at all. They did a terrible dis-service to all the people that they represent. Doc
