I have always heard that some jakes don't have a full fan is this true or not true?

I believe when people say this they mean that the bird has a full fan but they are not able to open it all the way so that it is even on both sides, more of a V shape.

True to some degree. I dont believe it has anything to do with them not being able to open their fan the whole way. Jakes have longer tail feathers right in the middle of the fan. The rest of the tail feathers on either side are shorter, unlike a mature bird where all of the feathers in the fan are pretty much the same length.

Re: Fact or Myth ?

christsavedme & BB11 nailed it.

Here is a pic of two jakes my dad and I shot last opening day:

My bird is on the left, don't really pay attention to the fan of my bird. That bird was dead 6 hours when we took these pics and he was very stiff so we couldn't open the fan for pics. But my dad's on the other hand, is a classic example of the raised feathers of a jake.

Now here is a pic of my second bird of 2006, a nice 3 year old mature tom. Check out the even fan on him:

Re: Fact or Myth ?

Jakes can open their fans just fine, but the forum is correct in that their center feathers on the fan are longer in the center, due to immaturity...there are some "early" hatch birds that have a jake beard...aka smaller than usual (3-5 inches) that have a full fan and are called "junior birds"....and a bearded hen will have a full fan, but shorter than a true gobbler 2 yrs old or older...home this helps............al
