LeafWiper
Alright guys im looking to buy a brand new bass boat. Im looking at the Tracker Pro Team 175TXW and the Pro Team 170TX. Its comming down to the motor and which one i can afford. What should i get, the 50 HP 2 stroke motor versus the 25 HP 4 stroke??? What are the disadvantages of the 2 stroke engine??? A 50HP 4 stroke is 2,000 dollars more, so there has to be somthing... Any input appreciated! Thank you!
Guest Andrea
Re: Engine question You won't have to mix your gas and oil anymore in a 4-stroke. The motor is super quiet and there are no more fumes. Plus....it doesn't guzzle gas either. We have a 40 horse Yamaha and it's the best money we've spent on a boat. When we get ready to outfit our deep-sea boat with 2 new motors...they will be 4-strokes also.
Randy
Re: Engine question Always max out the HP on a boat!! You will always regret it if you don't. Also your resale if you ever decide to sell, will be more difficult. Take this from someone who has owned more boats than most people have owned cars. Jeramie
Re: Engine question Four stroke! I go to pick up my first ever four stroke the first of the week. Ive ran 2-strokes and they can be a major pain. You can foul plugs, get the mix off and smoke like crazy, etc. IMHO, It would be a wise investment... dg
Re: Engine question 25 HP vs 50? Go with 50 HP. There is no mixing oil on the 50 horse either. It's called "oil injection". Just throw in a qt of TC-III (or whatever it calls for)occasionally and the engine will do the mixing. A quart lasts several trips on my 40 horse Merc. 25 vs 50 is a big gap. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Engine question I've got to vote for the 2 stroke also. The horsepower to weight ratio is much better than a 4 stroke, and with today's technology, fuel economy and reliability between the two are almost identical. I fished out of a new Ranger Z21 with a Merc 250 Verado last month. The Verado is a 4 stroke with a supercharger, and it didn't impress me at all. Other than being quiet, I couldn't see any advantage over the 2 strokes. In fact, there were a couple of boats with 250 HP 2 strokes that blew right past us. They had to be running 7 or 8 mph faster than the boat I was in.
Shaun_300
Re: Engine question I personally wouldn't get a 4-stroke to be honest with you, I'd stick with the 2-stroke anyday. Yes they're harder on fuel, but they're lighter, have better throttle response and they're more torquey.

[/ QUOTE ] I have a 40 HP 2 stroke, I dont mix the oil, the engine does it for me! LOL! All I do is add gas in one tank, oil in the other. Heck, my motor was made in 1992 too! Still runs good today, well as long as I keep the darn fireline out of the prop shaft!
