Summer/Fall plot help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im sort of in a dilemma here. Last fall I planted Martin's Fall mix (annuals and some clover) and it came up great and the deer loved it! (thanks martin!) The thing is, I want there to be a good stand of clover this summer for the deer to feed on but dont know if Ill need to add more clover to the plot or leave it. In August I plan on digging the ground up again and replanting annuals again.

I guess my question is..how should I go about my plot for this summer? Add more clover to the plot or just leave it, hoping a good stand of clover comes in? Also...should i spread fertilizer sometime this spring/summer?

Thanks in advance!

Kyle

Re: Summer/Fall plot help

Personaly I would back off on the Nitrogen in the fertilizer [ The first number ] A zero or no more than 5. Once the clover is established well there is no need for adding Nitrogen to your plot. It will only promote weed growth and will be harmful to the clover plants.

I would overseed the plot with a good quality clover seed. You might PM Martin for some more advice.

Would also agree with this. I use a 6-12-12 here. If you are looking to keep this plot as a perenial plot, might consider overseeding it with the hamann farms fall mix again in the fall, or possiblly go with one of the trefoil clover blends Martin offers.

Re: Summer/Fall plot help

i'm slow wink.gif I don't really understand your post completely. You already have clover in the plot but it is not thick enough? If you disc up the ground you will probably lose most of the clover you have. Your best bet would have been to frost seed over the existing clover you have now. Contact Martin to see if it is too late for your area. Another option is to overseed some clover in the plot this fall.

Is there another area you can disc up to plant your warm season annuals?

Re: Summer/Fall plot help

Basically im wondering if I just spread some clover over my plot this spring will it germinate or would I need to redisc the ground up? I plan on discing the ground up in august and planting an annual blend. I just want there to be some clover there this summer for the deer to feed on. This is my only plot area so I wont be able to plant my annuals anywhere else.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Summer/Fall plot help

I just hate to see you waste the clover--if the plot is properly taken care of you could get 3 to 5 years worth of life out of the clover--maybe even longer. No need to redisc it up if you have a good plot of clover--with proper moisture it will stay green and produce all summer and fall until it goes into winter dormancy. Clover is too expensive to keep planting every year and rediscing. Fertilize it and keep the weeds mowed.
