There goes my 4 wheeler.

My wife has been pretty sick lately, in fact she has lost about 20 lbs. in the passed 3 months. She took one of those at home test and the bar was blue. Yup, we're gonna have another kid. Very unplanned. In fact It was so unplanned that we dropped our maturnaty portion of our health insurance. We weren't planning on having any more kids, and were taking the necisary precations, so we thought.

She call the OBGYN today and just the doctors visits befor the birth is going to cost us roughly $3200. That's not including the birth or any hospital stays.

I was planning on getting a 4 wheeler this spring.

Guess not. crazy.gif

John... Congrats! I think?, no really, congratulations... as far as healthcare coverage... boy that is a sticky one, it might be tough to find a carrier that will pick you up... check with your current carrier, also check with the school, they might be able to find some type of coverage... if nothing else you can call your county services (but typically they don't like to "deal" with anyone who... works, pays their bills, and are productive members of society)[sarcastic]... no... hopefully if nothing else, county or state services would be able to provide some type of assistance. Best of luck and congratulations again.

title 19 is a fedral program regardless of how much you make the state has to provide care for mother and child

What is title 19 & what state are you in?

I make too much money for any state assistance here. I would have to have 9 kids to qualify for food stamps.

That's usually a good thing blush.gif

I would really look into getting the proper coverage. The birth is a trmendous pricetag!

It depends on the conditions of the birth.

We have been looking into a good way to have a baby for quite some time now. Nothing, until recently, has been promising. Insurance was sky high. We finally looked into paying cash for everything. We will get out for about $6,500 if payed out before the baby comes.

If you figure your insurance for roughly 21 months (at $100 a week) you're paying in $8,400. Thats realistic if you wait the year before you get pregnant (as you're suppose to). Now that she is pregnant I'm pretty sure she doesn't qualify for maternity. On top of that you still have co-pays and such and they can easily add up to over $2,000. You're now paying out over $10,000.

The major reason for insurance is the "What if" factor. We found an insurace that is $75 a month for major medical. It will even cover Cesarean if it is mandatory. The total cost of a 1-year span, $900. Add that with the $6,500, and you total $7,400. The major medical is suppose to cover everything, including the baby for the first two weeks to a month, I really cant remember. If there is anything wrong with the child they will pay for it.

Thats the route we've taken. We are currently trying to get pregnant. I just hope we have all of our ducks in a row. grin.gif

Re: There goes my 4 wheeler.

Our daughter, who is now 8, was born 8 weeks early wieghed just over 3lbs and spent a month in the hospital cost us all of $17 including copays. Our insurance at the time was only $179 a month including maturnaty.

The total bill befor insurance was around $20K.

The same insurance now is $650 a month. We dropped it and got a major medical for $260. I guess even with the price of the birth, we will still be better off in the long run. We'll aslo be able to get another tax deduction for the baby and for the medical cost.

Re: There goes my 4 wheeler.

OK Canadians, let me think about this for a minute. I get free health care if I live there but I pay a 15% sales tax.

If I buy $15,000 worth of taxable items per year that comes out to $2250 per year. Times the number of years I live there and pay taxes, say about 50, that comes out to $112,500 total that I'm paying for health care. Whether I use it or not!!!

No thanks.

Re: There goes my 4 wheeler.

John, Check w/ your school... see if they offer a flexible benefit plan, least wise you could take the money pre-tax... that would be an additional 20-30%...

Also, won't the major medical cover the birth... and the child once born... any hospital admission is generally included in "major medical" plans.

Re: There goes my 4 wheeler.

No doubt pregnancies are expensive even with insurance. Our coverages when my wife was pregnant with both our daughters was decent at best. Think with insurance on our youngest daughter, now 3 years old, cost us if I remember right around $2000 all total out of our pocket. Would check to see if you could possibly still get coverage again, would not hurt to ask.

Anyhoo Congratulations.
