WestKyTeacher
I have been wanting to buy the pellet type shells for my 22 for shooting, but was told by a friend that they would damage the barrel and mess up the way the 22 bullet shoots. Is there any truth to this?

WestKyTeacher
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets No, I'm afraid to try anything but the traditional 22 rifle bullet since I was told the pellets coming out of the barrel would mess up the shooting accuracy. What is the CB's?
okiedog
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets [ QUOTE ] Have you tried .22 CB's? [/ QUOTE ] I've got some boxes of CBs, they are fun to shoot. They use to also make a 22 BB, but I havn't seen those in a long time.
toddpipkin
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets I think WestKyTeacher is referring to .22 rimfire SHOT loads. They won't do any permanent damage to your gun, but don't expect much from them. MAY kill a snake at 15 feet, but I wouldn't try to get much more out of them than that. Your bore should be cleaned before shooting them, and MUST be cleaned after shooting them and before going back to regular bulleted ammo, if you expect anything CLOSE to accuracy. WestKyTeacher
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets Thanks Wing. I did a seach and found that one type is called the Rat-Shot, not sure if this is the same as the CB's Here is what I found, but it doesn't tell me how they alter my shooting or accuracy when going back to the regular 22 long rifle bullet. "Rat-shot is very small lead shot (usually #12 shot) which is typically loaded into a cartridge not generally considered a shotgun shell. The most common cartridges loaded with rat-shot are the .22 Long Rifle or pistol or revolver cartridges. Using rat-shot cartridges allows one to convert a handgun or rifle into a small shotgun suitable for short-range use."
okiedog
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets Ok.. I'am with ya now, my bad. I also have some of the rat shot. The ones that I have have a blue plastic tip that contains the very small pellets like a shotgun shell. They are not the same as a 22 CB. I have an old 22 cal. revolver that I have shot those in. Use to carry it with me when I went fishing, just in case I spotted a snake up close.
LETMGROW
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets I have shot a lot of " shot shell .22's " No real harm done if you clean the barrel well before trying to shoot .22 bullets. Have killed hundreds of rats when there were dumps around. The gun I used was a Stevens Mod. 15. Still one of the most accurate .22's I ever owned. AJ
Re: 22 Shells not Bullets I have a High Standard Sentinel handgun that has had many many boxes of .22 shot loads through it. I'll bet the last time the bore was cleaned was in the 80's. I cleaned the bore and took it to the range and it will still shoot tighter than I can hold it at 25 yards. That little gun has popped squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, hundreds of snakes, rats, you name it. The shot loads will not hurt the barrel at all. The CCI version has a blue capsule full of shot. It will not harm your accuracy at all. Mossberg used to make a smoothbore .22 rifle that came with some small clay targets. They were used to train shooters for wartime on how to hit moving targets.
