ryan1990
I was fishing yesterday and cought about 7 catfish and 5 bass and 3 bluegill. I was holding a 4 pound blue cat when he flopped up in the air. I cought him and one of those spikes the have on the fins on their side stabbed about a half inch into my hand. Well it burned like crazy. It felt like and EXTREMELY bad scorpion sting. I was wondering if there is poison in them as a defense or something? Guest tarbaby
Re: poisonous blue cat Ya we learned about it in my icthyology class last year. It's just for defense. I have had a couple do that to me as well. Luckily the pain goes away fairly fast. Jason

Guest Andrea
Re: poisonous blue cat Next time take the slime off the catfish and rub it into the area that got stuck. The ones that hurt the worst are the little 6 inch baby catfish. I tried to throw one back and just as I let go he flipped around and nailed my finger. Let me tell ya...............I heard it rip into my skin. I nearly passed out. The pain from that was so intense!!!!! Had that little joker not gone back into the river, I would have stomped the life out of him!!!!
Rhino
Re: poisonous blue cat They all hurt pretty bad when that happens but by far the worst ones are those dang hard head catfish. Fortunatly the only time I have to worry about them is when I take off to go redfishing or speckled trout fishing.

Leo
Re: poisonous blue cat Hardheads and sailcats do have poisonous spines. So do some of the small catfish species like madtoms. Bluecats don't have poisonous spines but the spines have so much bacteria on them you can get one heck of an infection. Take any wound from a catfish spine seriously. Boil the wound out with Hydrogen peroxide, then cover it with neosporin and a bandage. You can get a staff infection from any spine wound. Then you'll have to be on IV antibiotics and spend some time in a hospital bed. Watch the wound carefully, if you still have swelling and redness in a couple days go to the hospital. ryan1990
Re: poisonous blue cat Thanks Leo Ill keep an eye on it. I washed it in peroxide right after it happened and its just a little tender now. Im suprised to hear you say its not poisonous. It felt just like a scorpion sting on steroids. Guest Andrea
Re: poisonous blue cat The one that got me was a baby channel cat. I hate those things. Seems like when you catch one you catch a million. I hate when you get into a nest of those things.
