1st ATV

Thinking about buying a 2005 Kaw 250, 2 wheeler from a friend who's in need of cash. They go for $2995 new - so what's this worth? It's in good shape except where his dog chewed the mud flap off. I don't want to kick him while he's down, so what's a realistic price to pay?

Re: 1st ATV

what is the history of the bike? how well does it run? has it ever had anything major go wrong with it? ask him if you can ride it first. blue book is about $2150 but i would say around $2000. but i think the best thing to do would be to ask him what his bottow price is and if he is a good enough friend you might want to add a little bit to it just to help a friend out. but other than that,

Re: 1st ATV

He bought it new and he and his kid used it since on a limited basis. I didn't know KBB did ATV, I thought just vehicles, so thanks for the heads up there.

I've read reviews but just how much mud and rough terrain can a two wheeler handle? A lite rain and I'm left spinning wheels, or can it handle more? They say top speed is 40 but others claim 50-55. Any thoughts there?

Re: 1st ATV

Depends on how heavy you are. I am not light and I have a Honda Recon 250 that goes faster than I want to....I am guessing 30 mph or so.

I have ridden much larger Hondas and I find that mine has much better acceleration and handles better. The other bikes may have better top end speeds and such but are very heavy and I have quicker low end acceleration and better handling, imho.

As for what it can handle, there are two schools of thought on that. Personally, I like the light vehicle because I can lift it out of anything I could possibly get it stuck in....maybe excepting quicksand. You don't have the front end weight of the 4x4's but you can remedy that with some added weight on the front rack. You have to be a little more cautious going up steep hills because of the tendency to back flip....but heck I am old enough to know how much body parts cost to fix and have witnessed the excruciating pain of people lost to stupidity on 4x4's.....so I tend to just go around that hill! wink.gif

Friends come and friends go, you probably won't be speaking to this guy in a year, stick it to him while he is down! Ha, just kidding. I would take the blue book and offer him that. I wouldn't short him though because even though he is selling it, oftimes they are resentful for having had to sell their ride and lash out against the person buying the vehicle, instead of lashing out at the situation. You might even want to offer to buy it now to help him out and let him buy it back when he gets back on his feet--for market at that time. That way you just end up renting the ride for a while and it gives you a chance to test it out yourself.

Good luck,

New

Re: 1st ATV

you would be amazed with how good some 2 wheel drive bikes do in deep mud. there are guys on the highlifter forums with recon 250s with snorkles, mud tires for the back and snorkels for the exhaust. but sometimes just having a 2wheel drive bike causes you to rethink that mud hole and go around. we used to have an old yamaha moto-4 200 and i never got that thing stuck. after market mud tires on the back would make a huge difference. also i couldnt see that thing only goin about 30. but i also couldnt see it goin 55. probably around 45 would be better. but just let me know if you have any other questions. ill do my best to answer them.

Re: 1st ATV

My cousin has used a 2 wheel drive Honda 300 for many years in Wisconsin, and he's a big boy. Probably goes 250 lbs, and has never had a problem with power or getting stuck.

Not sure about that model...never been around a Kawasaki
