Some of you hockey fans might enjoy this little video on ESPN.com comparing highlights of Sid the Kid and Gretzky. Pretty awesome stuff. cool.gif

Which also brings us to the question, since we have had the oppurtunity to watch Crsoby for a couple of years now, is he really the next Gretzky and is he the one to finally catch and/or break some of Gretzky's records?

My answer....YES. grin.gif

Re: Crosby vs Gretzky

I don't think he will! But it is hard to compare players, from different era's, different style of hockey, with the new rules it will help a player like crosby, but the eighties were very light on defence and high high on scoring! It would be interesting if malkin had a better supporting cast this year if he would be better, plus look at gretzky's supporting cast it was unbelievable, no way you could keep a core of players like that together today with salary caps!

Well said and I agree. Although Malkin does have a pretty good supporting cast, and it should be even better in a couple years. Actually, it's even possible within the next few years that the Penguins will have the 3 best overall players in the league (Crosby, Staal, Malkin) so that should help Malkin and Crosby both hit their highest potential.

There are a few things though that Gretzky had that dudes like Crosby dont have in todays game.

Now, some of the rules have changed to benefit guys like Crosby. But other things have changed that leave him at a disadvantage. Watch Gretzky highlights and look at the size of the goalies and their pads back then compared to now. Its not even close. It looks like Gretzky is shooting through stick figures.

Gretzky also had the advantage of never being touched. If anybody even looked at him the wrong way they got their butt handed to them by McSorley or one of his goons. This is the biggest difference between Gretzky and Crosby I think.

Crosby gets very little respect from anybody. Players hate him, coaches hate him, fans hate him. I've never seen a guy get harrassed so much, take so many cheap shots every single game. Gretzky never had to deal with that. Honestly I think if Crosby was allowed to glide around the ice like Gretzky could without being touched he would be up around 150 points this year if not more.

Plus Crosby lives in an age were we treat everyone like wimps. Gretzky double even triple shifted all the time. That doesnt happen anymore. Crosby doesnt even get to stay on the ice for a whole 2 minute powerplay.

BTW--I dont want to sound like I am picking on Gretzky, I love Gretzky. And I feel the same way about what Lemieux and Jagr did early on in their careers compared to what Crosby is doing now.

My point is, if you take a 20 year old Gretzky and Lemieux and put them in todays game, no way they come anywhere near 200 points. I think their numbers would be pretty close to what Crosby is putting up now.

Re: Crosby vs Gretzky

I don't know that he's the next "Great One".With Crosby,Stall, and Malkin all being goal scorers I think the goals will be spread out between them.No doubt Crosby is going to break some records though, this kid is young and was putting the puck in the net right out of the gate in the NHL.

Do you guys think these three will all be franchise players? If there is such a thing anymore anyways.

For sure. Crosby already is one. Malkin and Staal are right behind him.

Malkin is one of the purest skaters I have ever seen, and has all of the stick/puck handling talent you can have he just needs to sure up defensively and be more consistent.

Staal, is already the best defensive forward on the Penguins at 18, and maybe one of the best in the league, plus he should have 30 goals by years end. If he continues to improve offensively and adds some muscle to that big frame of his, he is going to be a freakin monster. Maybe even better then Malkin.

But I could see all 3 of those guys being referred to the best 3 players in the league in a few years. wink.gif

It apears, as of recently anyhow, that Georges Laroque has helped to settle this situation down a little bit.

To answer the question...........no..........I don't believe Sid will rise to Gretzky's level. But he will be danged impressive as a close second.

Re: Crosby vs Gretzky

No. I don't see it. Like was said, it's hard to compare players from different era's so I try to look at how each players peers compared to both Sid and Gretz.

Gretz dominance (scored 200+ points his third year in the league) over his peers is far and away more dominant then what Sid is doing in todays game (when you compare him to the other leading scorers in the league).

So, no. He isn't the next Gretz. But I do think Sid is the best player since Mario and Gretz, and he's one heck of a leader.

I think he's got a shot at the assist record, and maybe some playoff records. But overall, Gretz has 61 records and the majority of them are safe forever IMO.

This kid is going to be awesome!I can't believe the Blues passed him up in the draft last year to get Eric Johnson. In my eyes if the Blues take Staal they make the playoffs this year and get a heck of a player for the NHL rookie salary.Instead they take a defenseman that is still probably 1 or 2 years out from being a NHL player IF he stays healthy.

The Blues weren't the only one that missed that one. Most people around here were hoping the Pens would get Johnson.

I think all the scouts underestimated Staal, and maybe rightfully so. He did not look like he belonged here in preseason. Due to a couple injuries he made the roster, otherwise he would not even be on this team this year, and all of the sudden he just took off on his own.

Re: Crosby vs Gretzky

Don't the Penguins remind you alot of the young Edmonton Oilers-you never pass up a Staal in the draft or bet against a Sutter lol. As for the Blues our local boy D.J King is doing a good job of protecting whatever talent they have lol. He spanked Barych and Parros this weekend-wait till you see his 'little' bro coming up.
