Corn-good I think

Cannot believe farmers around here have corn in already. Noticed yesterday the 60 acre field across the road has corn 3-4 inch sprouts now. That is good news I think, typically I have had some of my best seasons when they have had corn in that field, problem is we had a frost last night, supposed to have frosts the next couple nights, and a hard freeze with temps going down in the 20's Friday night. What do you guys think, will the corn be ok?

Re: Corn-good I think

I think it depends on the variety William. Some corn is cold hardy. Corn is really a species of annual grass and doesn't tolerate cold too well. If it stays dry it might do OK, if the roots get wet and cold, and stay that way for a few days, that corn isn't going to do very well.

Magic ground temp for corn is 52 degrees, so if the dirt gets below that........... frown.gif

Re: Corn-good I think

We had some corn in 2004 that got a hard frost on it a couple of nights in a row in mid april (during turkey season) and it made it through. It looked pretty bad for a week or so but it came out of it. Its probably gonna turn purple, then the ends of the leaves will turn brown, but I bet it will make it through. We even had soybeans outta the ground at that time and they made it to.

Re: Corn-good I think

Dont think the corn made it. The little green sprouts that were there are no longer visible at all. We had several nights in a row that it got down in the 20's, one that it supposedly dipped below 20 out here. Oh well, maybe they will replant with corn.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just read an article that according to the UT ag extension said of an estimated 60,000 acres of corn planted in this county probably half had to be replanted. Damages from the freezes statewide are suggested to be in the millions of dollars. The field across from us was replanted.

With that 60 acre field planted across from us, looks like my driveway bowhunting spot may be really good this year. Opposite side is supposed to be a high fence going up between my neighbor and the airport(homeland security). Got permission there on my neighbor, and got a spot picked out in his woods not far from where I found so many rubs late this last winter. Come late September early October, this corn could turn out to be good for our hunting.

we are planting corn this year because mainly people in our area cant afford the seed. i know that sounds kinda bad but when seed prices went up most of the farmers didnt want to plant it becasue it wasnt worth it.

we plante corn last year and its amazing....it can draw deer from miles when its Freezing Cold out.
