wtnhunt
Cannot believe farmers around here have corn in already. Noticed yesterday the 60 acre field across the road has corn 3-4 inch sprouts now. That is good news I think, typically I have had some of my best seasons when they have had corn in that field, problem is we had a frost last night, supposed to have frosts the next couple nights, and a hard freeze with temps going down in the 20's Friday night. What do you guys think, will the corn be ok?
Tominator
Re: Corn-good I think I think it depends on the variety William. Some corn is cold hardy. Corn is really a species of annual grass and doesn't tolerate cold too well. If it stays dry it might do OK, if the roots get wet and cold, and stay that way for a few days, that corn isn't going to do very well. Magic ground temp for corn is 52 degrees, so if the dirt gets below that...........
wtnhunt
Re: Corn-good I think Kind of afraid with the temps only going to get into the upper 50's the next few days here, this corn might not make it. Especially after all the heavy rain the past few days. Have never planted corn in late March here myself.
QDMAworks4me
Re: Corn-good I think Well it is early enough in the season, worse case they could plant it again. Most farmers are still farmers because they know what they are doing, I am sure they thought this out and planned for at least a few cold nights. nemodeerhuntersneighbor
Re: Corn-good I think We had some corn in 2004 that got a hard frost on it a couple of nights in a row in mid april (during turkey season) and it made it through. It looked pretty bad for a week or so but it came out of it. Its probably gonna turn purple, then the ends of the leaves will turn brown, but I bet it will make it through. We even had soybeans outta the ground at that time and they made it to.
DSGB
Re: Corn-good I think My grandfather planted his corn last week. It's a little earlier than he normally plants. It's pretty wet around here and it's not going to get too warm the next few days, either. I hope it makes it.
Tominator
Re: Corn-good I think [ QUOTE ] Its probably gonna turn purple, then the ends of the leaves will turn brown, [/ QUOTE ] Funny you mention that, purple leaves is a sign of a plant's roots being stressed because they can't absorb phosophorus. wtnhunt
Re: Corn-good I think From what I am hearing on the reports here, Friday night it is supposed to get down to 24 . Guess we will see.

wtnhunt
Re: Corn-good I think Dont think the corn made it. The little green sprouts that were there are no longer visible at all. We had several nights in a row that it got down in the 20's, one that it supposedly dipped below 20 out here. Oh well, maybe they will replant with corn. Ravin R10 man
Re: Corn-good I think if the "growing point" of the corn was not out of the ground(3 or 4 leaf stage) it will be fine.just the leaves that were out will die but the plant will shortly send out new growth. wtnhunt
Just read an article that according to the UT ag extension said of an estimated 60,000 acres of corn planted in this county probably half had to be replanted. Damages from the freezes statewide are suggested to be in the millions of dollars. The field across from us was replanted.

wtnhunt
With that 60 acre field planted across from us, looks like my driveway bowhunting spot may be really good this year. Opposite side is supposed to be a high fence going up between my neighbor and the airport(homeland security). Got permission there on my neighbor, and got a spot picked out in his woods not far from where I found so many rubs late this last winter. Come late September early October, this corn could turn out to be good for our hunting.

deerslayer79
planting corn is going strong here on the eastern shore and all the ruckus is that it may be runnin almost over 4 bucks/bushel and that rocks.Corn is a pretty tough plant,a couple of light frost might hurt it a touch, but it will pull out of it. PAstringking
we are planting corn this year because mainly people in our area cant afford the seed. i know that sounds kinda bad but when seed prices went up most of the farmers didnt want to plant it becasue it wasnt worth it. we plante corn last year and its amazing....it can draw deer from miles when its Freezing Cold out.
