SE_KSBowhunter
April 1 was the opening day for the Kansas turkey archery season. It is the first year that they have opened it early to archery hunters only. I went out that morning and set up on a timberline at the edge of a cattle pasture that the toms use as a strutting zone. There were several toms gobbling on roost, but at flydown they henned up and went silent. Finally, at mid-morning they began to gobble and move. I had two jakes work into my decoys and had a nice tom hang up just out of range, strutting and gobbling. I didn't end up wit h a bird that morning, but it was still a great hunt. I went out later that evening and set up along a hedge row on a green wheat field. I had a tom answer my call and a few minutes later a hen, two jakes and the tom entered the field about 200 yards down the hedge row. The tom was strutting and gobbling the whole time and kept the jakes away from the hen, then he headed for my decoys. He strutted all the way into my spread and brushed against the jake decoy. At 9 yards, I stuck him and he ran about 25 yards, then fell over. He weighed 24 lbs with a 10-1/2" beard and 1" spurs. It was a great day of hunting and walking out of the field with a bird was just an added bonus. Best of luck to everyone this season and be safe.
