Took a weekend trip... (pics)

with my favorite travel buddy this weekend, my nephew Tyler. We went to our favorite place... Western North Carolina. Bryson City to be exact.

It's no secret that we both love train rides, so we went to ride the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad for probably the 10th time. And me, with my great planning, chose a weekend when it was 23 degrees and we even got a little snow. Just a dusting though.

Anyhoo, we left Friday morning and headed up. We usually take highways up there, but we decided to take back roads this time, and we're glad we did.

A little winding mountain road somewhere north of Franklin, NC.

The train wound it's way through the mountains from Bryson City to the Nantahala Outdoor Center on the Nantahala river west of Bryson City, where we had a layover for lunch.

Did I mention it was 23 degrees? I know someone who will listen to me when I tell him to bring more than a windbreaker.

The breeze coming off the river was brutal! Normally this area would be full of kyakers and rafters. Not today (well, yesterday), though, however there were a few further down river.

I've been on a lifelong quest to find a Butterfinger bar not broken in its wrapper. At long last- SUCCESS.

On the way home we encounter several very nice views. This one is somewhere between Blairsville and Helen, Ga

Not a common sight in Ga in April, even for extreme N.E. Ga.

Some random guy who freaked out my nephew when I was in the store in Andrews NC. He said he was one of the guys who helped hide Eric Robert Rudolph, but I doubt it.

I raft that river a lot....beautiful place. The fly fishing on the upper river is outstanding....best in the US, I think.

I wouldn't dismiss that claim so easily, Eric had a lot of friends up there. Before he was caught, they were selling shirts up there that said things like "Eric Rudolph, winner of the FBI hide and seek contest". laugh.gif
