A lifelong goal almost in my grasp!

I have admired the state troopers of Oklahoma most of my life, and it has been a dream of mine to join their ranks. Upon graduation from college this may, I will be applying for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. This doesn't mean that I will make it in, but it's just one step closer to achieving that goal. I'm siked! Just thought I'd share a lil excitement in my life at the moment!

Re: A lifelong goal almost in my grasp!

Kyle..coming from someone who has 18 years in already, am currently a supervisor for a police agency in a municipality, and am looking at retirement from this job...stay focused, stay in shape, and stay out of trouble. Law enforcement agencies really take a hard look at candidates now since so many people apply. They can be really selective, and dig deeply into backgrounds and school achievements, or trouble. Get some first aid background maybe for a local rescue squad...volunteer somewhere...looks good. Take online FEMA courses...whatever you can. Unless you are in an unusually small town, the days of low paid LEO's is a thing of the past. It is a good profession with plenty of room for advancement, schooling, further training, and pays well. The only thing is you put up with morons, know-it-alls, turds and civilians that are anti police for no legitimate reasons. You'll get sick of the donut jokes (everyone thinks they are the first one to say), people minding your business when your not working, and always being expected to be able to get someone out of a DWI, because they know your 3rd cousins ex-girlfriend. If you don't believe me that a lot of the public hates LEO's...search police related videos in youtube.com, or google videos, and read the comments under the videos. Mostly from some nerd that probably got caught with a beer one time as a juvenile and now he thinks he is a "gangbanger" and takes his frustration out by pounding a keyboard with his fingertips. You'll deal with people who think they know how LEO's should act, why they do something or have advice as to why they would have done it better, and have never once put on the uniform and been expected to make life altering decisions in a split second that lawyers, the media, and the public can mull over for months. PM me if you have any questions. I'd be happy to give you some pointers...

Congrats to you Kyle. I can't wait to be in your position in a few years. I am a freshman CJ major right now and I love everything about it so far. Good luck with your tests when you take them. Mabe you will be able to give me some tips in a few years.

Take more than CJ course...like I just answered in another PM...law enforcement agencies don't get real excited because someone has a CJ course....take a variety or courses.

Re: A lifelong goal almost in my grasp!

It's a CJ major so in the curriculum are psycology classes, corrections classes, and all the regular criminal justice classes. I also take all the gen ed classes like the english, math, social studies, writing, and computer classes. Almost all of the classes that have anything to do with criminal justice are taught by retired LEO's. I may be coming with questions for you sometime swampy.

That's the way the curriculum is at my college as well.
