whitetailtrax
First of all, I don't really know who this Imus character is and have never listened to his radio program, so I have very little background on the guy. I did hear the comments he made about the Rutgers basketball team - it's all over the media. Here's my question/problem: Why do people get so upset about the babblings of one idiot? One person, one mind, one mouth made some stupid remarks and the world is thrown into disarray! Why do we as a nation care so much about what one person says? Why does political correctness rule our society today? It's just unbelievable to me. Am I the only one who can't understand why society gets so upset when some celebrity messes up? Gator
Re: Imus comments What gets me about the whole thing, is why is it such a big deal, when if a BLACK MAN had said the same thing, NOTHING would have come of it.............. wtnhunt
Re: Imus comments Figured this would come up sooner or later. My personal opinion on this is that it has all been given way too much attention. The man made stupid comments, and he was clearly in the wrong, then he apologized. His comments were wrong, and were in fact degrading to women, he is suspended from work, maybe will lose his job latest I heard. From what I heard of the comments though, I am not sure where the race issue is coming into play, unless he said more that the networks are not telling about. I guess I am not really so sure as to what he said exactly that is being referred to as racist. I mean he used the words "nappy headed..", was this what they are saying is racist? I think his reference calling the players the other word he used in that same statement was very poor on his part as well, but was degrading to women in general, not solely to blacks. For that alone, he should have to deal with what he said however his employer feels fit to deal with him, not how Sharpton or Jesse Jackson see fit to deal with him. Those two have no business in this. Think the mess that took place with Sharpton from what I saw of it was totally uncalled for, why get the man on air on your show to have him apologize just to rip him, and not accept the apology, and then go on to demand he resign? Think as has happened in the past with others who have made similar mistakes, this is overplayed and there is a bit of over reaction, and results in a lot of drama that is really pretty foolish and totally unnecessary. Really all that seems to do in my opinion is create more tension and angst. I am in no way excusing Imus for what he did, as it was wrong, but I think that the attention this has gotten with the marches, demonstrations, and rainbow push coalition's part has gone a bit overboard. buckee
Re: Imus comments It's pretty strange these days when someone in the public eye makes a comment of any kind. The media crucifies who they will, and excuses who they will. I think it's all based on ratings..LOL I can't figure it out

[/ QUOTE ] Yup. That's what they're going on, and what a joke. Actually, I'm pretty sure a black guy who is a part of Imus show referred to them as "hardcore hos" which led Imus to concur that "they are a bunch of nappy-headed hos, I'll tell you that." However, the media isn't picking up or reporting that fact. What's really funny, is that there are white girls on the team too...so if Imus said the Rutgers team was a bunch of "nappy-headed hos" I'd assume he was referring to the white girls too, right? I mean it's not like he singled out only the black members of the team. I'm sure if Imus referred to the team as "bald-headed hos" everything would have been fine. So, what this really shows is that Sharpton believes the black players to be "nappy-headed" himself...and apparently, he only takes issues once a white man says something to that effect. Sharpton only uses these situations for his own publicity. He is not a good leader or representative of the black community.

oldksnarc
Re: Imus comments Exactly. White says it and it's racial. A person of color says it and nothing is said. If you watched the news conference from Rutgers - the coach (black) said the girls were "articulate." Didn't a white guy - Biden - say Obama was "articulate" a couple months ago. And he was crucified - AND he is a liberal. Guy was wrong - period. They need to get over it.

muggs
Re: Imus comments Everything that has been said so far is true. But lets keep in mind that the comments were uncalled for and pretty offensive....but... Why in the world is this such a big issue. The media, and those involved are making this out to be the end of the world. One man's "offensive" comments shouldn't have this much impact on anything. It's the reaction from Rutgers that's killing me. I think one public statement, from either the coach or Rutger's Athletic Airector would have been the appropriate thing to do. Instead, they get the whole team up in front of the cameras and parade they around...only adding to the severity of the situation. And for what??? Let these girls stay out of the public eye. They didn't ask for any of this, and they shouldn't be asked to be pawns for Reverend Al or the school. What really got me, was the fact they had a white player from the team make a statement....umm...why? Imus didn't single out only the black players, he was referring to the entire team. This only shows the media, and Al Sharpton's preconceived notions. Not to mention, the phrase "nappy-headed" can be found in titles of numerous books, songs, rap lyrics, etc... What am I missing? The sad thing is there will be a witch hunt for Imus' career now...and once the corporations start pulling their ADS, look out, he's done. Actually, I've heard two major corporations have already pulled their ads (can't remember which two). Imus is done.

Imus didn't single out only the black players, he was referring to the entire team. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, noticed that on the news last night as well. Cannot see how his comments were so devastating to these girls lives, that they are making this big a deal of it, nor do I see why these girls are letting this get to them so bad. Seems to me the girls as a team are maybe a bit sheltered if Imus words here were the most offensive thing they have been subjected to and it is really hurting them as bad as the media is claiming. Imus screwed up and did it on air, but they really need to get over it, people say things more offensive than this without getting any attention at all. Something that kind of got me, and I did not get to hear all of it with the kids at supper time, was that right after the white girl was interviewed, NBC went on to say something more about the "racial derogatory remarks" Imus made, that just seems a bit contradicting coming after talking with the white team member. Hate to say it, but it really would not surprise me in the end for there to be some sort of suit come of this, and it will likely be against the networks who were carrying Imus. Sad that is how people think nowadays, but with Sharpton and Jackson involved, no telling where this will end up, have not heard if the aclu is involved yet or not, but bet they might be. buckee
Re: Imus comments I don't condone what this guy said in any way shape or form, but he is well known for being an off-the-wall foul languaged jerk anyway, and that's why people watch him. You know, it sure is weird that you don't see these black gangster rappers, losing their record contracts, because Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are outside picketing their use of language. Where's Jesse and Al...eh???? These rappers use a lot worse language than this, , but seem to be immune to any racial criticism Jessi and Al are almost laughable, because they themselves are racist against whites and others. Laughable, if it wasn't so sad that is.

Guest michael_bolton
Re: Imus comments The worst thing that happened to the black community is Al Sharpton and Jessie Michael Jackson. These two clowns have done more to keep the black man down for their own gain than any other could dream of. Funny thing though that the double standard is never brought up by them, or where were they for Reginald Denny when he needed them to stop racial violence? Rodney King become their next project to promote their hate filled ideas.
wtnhunt
Re: Imus comments Kind of wonder what Bill Cosby might have to say on this, if he will say anything. Would be nice to hear a clear voice of reason from a person from within the black community who seems to have it together and not be prone to over reacting like some. Can recall a few years back, when he was talking about this issue of remarks and how they are taken and about how rappers were only compounding the problems with the language they use. Al Sharpton was asked point blank on NBC this morning if there was a double standard to which he seemed to get somewhat hostile in his reply. Really is very sad.
