What would you change...

Well things have been pretty slow in here lately so I was trying to think of something we might all be able to talk about. Many of us are on here because we love deer hunting a great deal.

My question is if you could change one rule in your state under your current deer hunting regulations to make you happy what would it be? It could be anywhere from changing the minimum hunting age, to how may bucks or does you can shoot, to what type of buck you can shoot, season length anything really.... or maybe you are lucky and are really happy with your hunting regulations grin.gif and if you are one of those people you are very lucky!!

Earn a buck. Our doe herd appears to be outta control, and there are those that REFUSE to shoot a doe, but would kill a small buck

I really think that Earn a buck would be a great way to manage a deer heard also, maybe a good start to getting local deer heards closer to one to one.

Would implement an antler restriction that had a spread width requirement of antlers to be past the ears minimum for ALL ADULT hunters. Maybe cut the limit from 3 to 2 total bucks allowed. Would also cut back some of the liberal limits and doe hunts in specific areas where the deer numbers are way down.

Well, that is more than one, but it kind of all ties together.

Earn a buck.

Heck Gator I'd be happy if our state would legalize the killing of does by non-residents. Earn a buck would be great but very few non-residents can legally kill a doe here right now.

You'd think with 1,750,000 deer in this state non-residents could legally kill does but they can't. crazy.gif

Right now a non-resident must be the owner or leaseholder of the land he's hunting in order to legally kill a doe. That basically leaves statewide herd management up to the residents. That law is nuts!

You guys that say Earn-A-Buck might have a different opinion if you actually had that rule. Although the zone I mostly hunt has never been EAB, most of the people I talk to don't like the rule.

I would have antler restrictions. Either a certain number of points or the width of the ears.

I self impose a earn a buck on myself. But I'd like to see other do so or have it a rule. Otherwise, lengthen the season and make it doe only.

Matt, I am not 100% in favor of earn a buck, but with a herd that appears to be out of control, I REALLY think this may be the ONLY VIABLE solution to getting the herd balanced. The thing that gets me is theer are those out there that just WILL NOT kill a doe, yet will gladly take a young buck.

Rhino, I can't believe that a non-resident can't kill a doe there, that is just plain DUMB

Yep....it sure is Gator.

Here's how the actual law reads word for word.

"A non-resident may not kill antlerless deer except on lands he owns or on lands where he leases the hunting or fishing rights, or a non-resident who has a native son or daughter nonresident lifetime sportsman license or a resident lifetime sportsman license may take antlerless deer on private lands, wildlife management areas, or national wildlife refuges."

[/ QUOTE ]We're in it again.(67B) I personally feel EAB is a good thing. Since they first started it we are seeing a more even buck to doe ratio, and seems to be a healthier herd. It has also aided in some of the neighbors seeing how good it feels to be able to pass on the first little buck that walks by opening morning of the gun season. Thus putting some age structure on the herd as well. Of course this is, JMO! wink.gif

Re: What would you change...

I wish we'd be given a doe and buck tag here. In my WMU we automatically get a buck tag, but have to enter a draw for a doe. Which I think is dumb because we always see more does than bucks. confused.gif

Also wish we had an early bow season in early september, when you don't have to dress like an eskimo like we do in December. It'd be nice to go out in a t-shirt. Ever try and pull a bow back quietly with snowpants, 4 shirts, 2 pairs of pants and 2 coats on? smirk.giftongue.gifcrazy.gif

up in the neck of the woods I live in(northern Alberta), the fish&game department put in a doe tag a couple of years ago for a minumal charge. Something like $5.00 /tag. Then the powers to be firgured the deer population was still to high so they started giving out 2 tags for the same price. But still no one buying them, so I believe that Earn a Buck would work in some of the wmu around here
