I am at the point of choosing some new broadheads. I have been looking at the Rage expandables (most likely the 2 blades) and the Montecs. What are ya'lls thoughts about each? They both have their strengths and weaknesses, and I am stuck. Let me know what ya'll have seen and heard about each. Thanks.

I have not used the rage, but have heard alot of good things about them, i tried the montec but did not find them sharp and i am not going to buy their stone to sharpen them, i want to buy a broadhead that is killer sharp,,, but the new STRIKER by G5, is scary sharp,

The Rage heads look neat. I've never used them. I've only seen them in 100gr weight that may be their only option.

You don't need G5s sharpener to sharpen a Montec. Any quality knife sharpening stone system will do the job nicely. I use a Smith's Abrasive diamond stone. Medium then touch up on fine. I've killed little and BIG stuff with the Montec. It's a good head.

Nobody's head hits "exactly" like fieldpoints beyond 25yds. Some are closer than others. But same hole? Never seen it.

The game you are pursueing is important in this choice. If elk are a possibility the Montec wins hands down. These heads are great penetrators. With deer, the large cutting diameter of the Rage might shorten recovery.

The Montec heads are durable. They are truly reusable with a resharpen job. You can shoot them into a target, re-sharpen and hunt with the same arrow you sighted in with.

g5's not for me!

i lost two nice bucks, found them both eventually after the coyotes had their way with them. both shots were on video and both true double lung hits from less than 15 yards. after about 20 yards, no blood. i havent shot them since and wont. ill even go so far as to tell my close hunting buddies if theyre shooting them, you cant hunt with me! LOL im joking of course. but seriously, for the money you can find alot better heads on the market. youll be able to tune any head tp fly perfect if your bow is tuned right. choose what works best for you, just dont expect the g5's weather thay are this years heads or last to be sharp enough to bleed the animlas the way you need to. just my .02.

Not that unusual for an animal not to bleed within the first 20yds with any broadhead. In fact I've found animals I've taken before finding the first drop of blood just following tracks. If there is blood on the arrow I know it's a hit. Bloodtrailing is tracks and blood. Always.

thats not what i said....

i said after 20 yards there was no blood. archery hunting requires you bleed the animal to death- theres no blunt trauma like rifle bullets or slugs doing the damage. your putting trust in a arrow head to make the animal bleed so severly you can find it without doubt. i made a quality shot on both animals and did my job. the g5 montecs didnt do that for me.... neither time i gave them a chance. ive shot many deer before and since with various heads and never have i had the experience or heart break i did with the montecs. to each their own and all that jazz, but as far as im concernd they arent worth the package i bought them in. just my .02.

I've been shooting Montec G5's for the last 3 or 4 years and love them. They make deer bleed real good:D My question to the above is....Did you sharpen them, or use them as is out of the package? Because Montecs don't come sharp out of the package, they require a good sharpening, and a little know-how to get a good edge on them. If you don't enjoy sharpening things, don't buy Montecs...simple as that.

Ain't that the truth. I don't think I've ever found any great amout of blood (ussually nothing) in the first 20 yards or further sometimes.

well yes

i sharpen everything, i build custom knives and to me nothing is sharp enough. im not here to get in a big drawn out arguement over the internet --BUT, im shooting heads from long ago that usually put animals down in less than 40 yards. there is exceptions, i shoot alot of hogs, coyotes and deer every year. i killed 4 nice bucks this past season, one of them went over 50 yards. the other 3 less than 40. ive taken 9 animals with the same head just sharpened it each use...as for blood trails, when i hit em they bleed buckets, seriously.

lets just agree to disagree, but again-- the montecs left me wanting and needing more. animals i we shoot deserve it.
