Guest IL_HuNtIn_KiD
Ok I've decided to put a new motor in my truck its a 1986 Chevy Scottsdale K20 with a 700-R-4 transmission. I've got it narrowed down to http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productitem_10001_10002_752313_-1_85892 That one or http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productitem_10001_10002_749876_-1_59294 That one...which one do you guys advise would be better. Just do some heavy towing in the fall with harvest..and a coule times a month hauling hogs to the Tyson meats plant so what do you think? Shaun_300
I personally would go for the 454 H.O. for the 3/4 ton truck. If it was a half ton I'd go with the 350 or 383. Don't get me wrong, a 350 or 383 would push it no problem, but if you're going to go with a brand new motor I'd go with the bigger one, you'd be wishing you did if you went for the smaller one. stevebeilgard
the 454 will get you 8 miles per gallon. the 350 will get you 16, but won't pull as much weight. so, figgure out which is overall best for your circumstances.
wtnhunt
Got a 350 in my 98 model 3/4 ton hd truck. Looked at one with a 454, and chose the 350 over the 454. The truck with the 350 actually was setup with the heavier brake system, and a heavier axle on the rear end. With the 350 it pulls just fine for me. Have pulled my tractor on a heavy dual tandem equipment trailer with it, getting going is not as much trouble as getting stopped, electric brakes sure help alot there. Spot on. Personally there isn't anything a 350 wont do for me. My F150 has the 5.4 in it. I pull loads of stuff including 4-round bales on a 16' steel trailer (well over 5k lbs). Ive also pulled a track hoe which was pushing 7k. Stepping way up isnt a good thing. Gas consumption goes WAY down. Personally id stick with the 350. Even though im a ford man, they are simply the best Engine EVER made. You can find parts anywhere, cheap. And they are easy to work on as well as easy to hop up. texastrophies
If your tranny is original & stock and you put one of those high hp bullets in there, you might want to prepare your budget for another expenditure.
QDMAworks4me
I would go with a 350 if I were you.

The 700R4 was the heaviest tranny you could get before allison stepped in with chevy
dlriggins
The major problem is the 700 r4 is inherently weak especially in the converter and front pump the vain type pump is great for the cars and stock truck but has a nasty problem of failing when under a lot of torque and hp 454 sounds good until it breaks the rest of the drivetrain convert to a th400 or allison or there are stand alone trans modules for the 4l80 e and transfer cases arent cheap either
