3whunt
Well as all of you Okies can attest, opening weekend in Oklahoma was way short of perfect weather. With the temperature hovering around the freze point, I hunted all day Friday without hearing a single bird. Sunday morning I did manage to call in a hen, but still no gobbles were heard. On my way back to the truck my father and I noticed two birds in the middle of a road that runs right along the top of a very steep ridge with 5 year old pines covered in briars on both sides of the road. We managed to sneak to within 100 yards of the birds without being seen. A few clucks and yelps on the Ol' Yeller was all it took to bring the birds into range. An additional jake and hen joined the two we were watching. The trio of jakes and the hen cautiously proceed to within 20 yards of our hideout. After two days of the hardest turkey hunting I have ever endured, I let the Remington 1100 & 2 3/4" #6's roar. I know he isn't the biggest bird in the woods, but it has been 3 years since I have taken a bird and even longer since my dad has called one in for me. http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/3whunt/07jake3.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/3whunt/07jake2.jpg http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/3whunt/07jake.jpg
Bowtech_archer07
Congrats on the bird, but in the picture it doesn't look like a jake. The middle feathers are longer than the rest. Maybe i'm just blind or something. Congrats anyway!!
Turkeygirl
Congrats! Been 3 years since I've gotten a turkey, so even a jake owuld be a trophy to me!
3whunt
Yeah he almost had a full fan, but he didn't have any spurs and his beard was only about 4.5" long. Plus he only weighed in at 12lbs. Definetly a Jake, and he will be great eatin.
Bowtech_archer07
That's really odd that he had almost a full fan. O well, he'll taste the same!! Congrats.

3whunt
Thanks for the help there Shaun. Yup, 2 3/4 is plenty of boom when you get them in close. I have used #4's before, but the 6's seem to up the count of vital hits.
