Huntress
Have an idea some of you might want to try, so I'd thought I'd share. My dad took the fan and wings off of a friend's bird and rigged it onto his jake decoy with an old beard he had from one of his previous turkeys. It looked okay up close in the driveway, but when I went out to pick him up from hunting and looked across the field, I made myself wait before walking out there because I couldn't tell the difference between his decoy and a real tom. It looks amazing!! Looks alot like Pretty Boy but about 80$ cheaper. I guess it takes getting a bird first to do this or do like him and find someone who was going to throw away the wings and fan. I will post some pictures of the setup if you guys wants. I don't have a jake decoy but I am going to get one and use my fan/wings from my bird. How he did it: He cut a slot in the tail of his deke and ran a small piece of wire through the fan and poked it through the decoy. The wire is held behind the fan in the tail, through the fan, and fastened in the back of the decoy. This holds the fan upright. He took bailing twine and tied the wings about 8 inches apart and draped them over the decoys back, open so the main feathers are touching the ground. Like I said, this looks really good. He has already had some bittersweet success...he had two jakes come to his hens and then when they saw the tom they moved out of bow range but still sttrutted for the hens. So, it will scare young birds but he had a tom come in and beat up on the decoy. The real bird was more interested in the tom than the 2 hens he had out but the tom knocked the wings crooked off the decoy and kind of spooked him. My dad is working on fixing the wings better. Sorry for making such a long post but thought some of you might be like us and not want to spend a bunch of money on a good decoy...here's a good method. Let me know if you want some pictures. HuntnMa
my sister does that, but not with the wings, just the tail of the jake....last year, we left the set up to go for a gobbling bird, after she shot the bird, we got back to where we were hunting and the decoy was beat up, must of had a tom come in while we were gone, or a caracara, something....
