BearClaw
I'm a little new at tukey hunting on my own without my hunting partner and mentor(My buddy had to work on opening day here in Maryland) Did some calling and went to put the caller down and here comes a hen towards the decoy. She went behind a tree and I went for my gun(wasn't sure what it was at first). In the process I saw hen #2 and they both spotted me and took off. Then turkey #3 comes up over this rise and does a large loop around the decoy with it's head up like a periscope. It had a red head but I could not spot any beard, not even a little 'jake' beard so I let him pass. My buddy told me later it was a jake based on what I said. If you knew it was a jake but didn't see a beard, what would you have done?
Guest realtrhunter
In my mind you did the right thing, for two reasons. One: You weren't sure what it was. One of the first rules of shooting is to know what you are shooting at. Two: If it was a Jake, let him grow up, next year he will have a beard and some spurs. I can't say much though. This is my 3rd year hunting and still havent shot one yet.

toddyboman
Have to agree you did the right thing by not shooting. Like others said you wasn't sure what you was shooting at. Just think next year he will be big and fat, supporting a nice beard and spurs. Good luck!!
