Newarcher
This is my son's first year playing baseball. He played soccer previous years so he started out in kid pitch level baseball, a bad idea. He is the ONLY first year player on his team with most having played at least three seasons. First practice, I threw a huge pop up that nailed him right behind the left ear on the corner of the skull (he flinched at the last second).....that wasn't good. A week later, I hit him with a pitch right on the rotator cuff (hey, I am not a pro). He can't ever seem to take one off the fatty part of the leg or somewhere that it doesn't hurt as badly. He has been steadily improving over the past few weeks. At first, he was pulling out of the batter's box to avoid getting hit. Then we cured that and had him standing in but he wouldn't swing. Lately, he has been standing in and swinging hard but at some really bad pitches. But at least he is swinging. Last week, he was hit by a pitch (off the point of the right elbow) by one of the hardest throwing pitchers out there. He shed a couple tears but hid it well and ended up scoring. His first score. Wednesday, he took his first bat and struck out on some high reachers. Got up to his second bat, stood firm in the box, and smacked one to the fence between first and second base. A line drive that didn't touch down until well into the outfield. Unfortunately, because we play four outfielders instead of three, he only made it to first base instead of getting a double like would normally happen. Two batters later, he scored on a triple all the way from first base. They gave him the game ball for getting his first hit and scoring his first run of his own account. He was on cloud 9 the rest of the night as were we. I am proud of him for progressing so quickly and I hope to keep him in it. I was dreading this baseball stuff because of the time committments for practice and games, but I am telling you that I am absolutely loving this. I am an addict, too bad it ends in a month's time. He needed this right about now. I felt like Steve Martin in that movie parenthood...great movie. I think it gave me a boost as much as it did my son. Guest Clay008
Congrats! I am sure that was encouraging to get the game ball. There may be a summer or fall league he could play in. There were some here in VA were I grew up.
Randy
That's great to hear he is improving so fast!! Isn't it great to watch them grow?!! i'll bet that ball was a great confidence booster. Now if he could just find someone to pitch to him that dosen't hit him it would get that much better!!! j/k:D Man, you don't know the half of it. We had an early game Wednesday and none of the other coaches got there in time for batting cages, which left ME. Well, I had an off day. Hit one batter on the fingers (he shoulda moved) and hit the other batter in the leg. They toughed it out. I never intend to throw to/at any other kids but they all show up an hour early for the game so I hate to tell them no. I did make it fun though and took a yellow safety baseball that has a smiley face on it. I tell the kids that the ball is mocking them and I even make snide comments about the players with the ball in front of my face, as if it is mocking them. Well, their prize is to hit me with a ball while I am pitching to them. Last week, I sent old yellow and one of our best hitters sent it right back down the pipe. I got my glove up just in time to send it off the top of my head instead of into my eye. He was handily congratulated by the team. Seems they hold a grude that group does!
