Youth Season Success

Ok guys and gals, long story coming. I had a shooter cancel for the first day of youth season, I put the word out I was available to guide a young hunter that day.

I had a friend contact me about a young man who loved to hunt, but his father and mother split up years ago, and his father didn't spend much time with his kids. The mother had been taking the boy deer hunting, but they had no success. He asked if I could take this shy 12 year old and just give him a good morning.

I met the boy the night before season and ran him through how things would work the next morning. I would carry the gun, set with him, and tell him when to shoot. We would be hunting private ground, so we should be the only hunters on 200 acres.

5:00 am we met at a predetermined location, drove to out hunting area. We got out of the truck and I told him to remove his hat for our morning prayer. "Lord, thak you for this great day you have given us, and please if it is your will let us pile one up". We worked to where I had heard birds the previous morning, and listened. Sure enough the gobblers where there, once the old bird opened up, everything else shut down. I set the decoys out, and explained that the birds closest to us where'nt dominant, and would probably come in quiet. I did a soft tree yelp on the slate call Bowhunter 56 sent me. (thanks Andy) Then I did a fly down cackle on the mouth call. I did a little yelping on Andy's call to let them know I was on the ground and available, and got quiet. Here comes the fun part. I looked to the left of the decoys, and here they came, 3 Jakes. Zak got into position, but the birds had seen the movement. I did some soft calling to keep them there till Zak could line up on one of the birds. I heard Zak say can I shoot, and told him when he had the gobblers head in the open to go ahead. BOOOM, I took off as fast as my little legs could carry me. Yep, you guessed it. There was a beautiful 17 1/4 lb jake with a 4 inch beard, I gave Zak the biggest bear hug and told him how proud I was to be able to share this day with him. We removed our hats and thanked God for letting us take that bird.

Boy do I love taking these kids out, this boy could wait to get to school and show off his pictures. I will post his pic with his turkey if I can ever upload photo's , If someone can upload them now I will e-mail it to them. Thanks for listening, and thanks to andy for a great call. Now I can put that one on the shelf with the other collectors I have. God Bless.
