NEIOWAARCHER
It all depends on where you hunt. And it also depends on what your hunting.
bobw
sorry i am hunting deer in the southern zone where it is allowed
coles
i dont know about a pump gun but in montana if you have an semi-automatic rifle say something like an AR-15 and you for some reason want to hunt with it you have to have a 5 round clip. nothing more. you cant have a 10 or 20 round clip and only put 5 in it. but i dont know about your area. sorry i couldnt help more. just call your local game warden or DNR office. they should be able to tell you. LifeNRA
In PA, as many it can hold! For NJ. no idea! Never knew there was a limit on manually operated rifles.
wtnhunt
Will depend on your state laws. The limit here for deer is 5 rounds in the firearm total. Would check with your state and local game laws.

AJ
It is unlawful to hunt big game with: An autoloading firearm with a capacity of more than 6 shells (one which requires that the trigger be pulled separately for each shot), except an autoloading pistol with a barrel length of less than 8 inches. This comes from the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation
RangerClay
What model rifle are you using Bob and what caliber? Most pump rifles hold only 5 shells unless you have something like a Winchester Lightning.

wtnhunt
If you are dropping deer in their tracks why do you need to carry more than ONE in the chamber? I would, and think most in here have discouraged using a .223 in the first place, why you ask if you are bent on this and not going to listen anyways? These questions you have asked sounds like the makings for some injured shotup deer running around in NY. Check YOUR game laws, follow them. Hey, the guy just wanted to know if he would get arrested if he carried his gun with a ten shot clip and he got his answer. No need for you to hyjack this with your opinions of the .223 for deer. Isn't it the rule around the forums that if it's legal to leave people alone.

No need for you to hyjack this with your opinions of the .223 for deer. Isn't it the rule around the forums that if it's legal to leave people alone. Maybe I am wrong, but the question was asked. Yes, it was answered, and advice was given on the topic that was asked not only in this thread but also in another one that does pertain to this one. Not hijacking a thread when the information is pertinent to the question that was asked. It is not like I am totally off the posters topic. If someone does not want honest answers from people who have good intentions with the information they share here, they need not ask the questions in the first place. In a lot of states, a .223 is not even legal. Just recently became legal in TN to hunt with any centerfire caliber rifle, but I personally would still not hunt with or encourage anyone to hunt with anything smaller than a .24. That is my opinion to which as I understand it I am still also entitled.
bobw
never took a bad shot and never lost a deer. shoot in open fields mostly.
RangerClay
It is not like I am totally off the posters topic. If someone does not want honest answers from people who have good intentions with the information they share here, they need not ask the questions in the first place. But that is the point. He asked about the capacity of his gun. I asked him what he was carrying so I could better answer his question. He did not ask for your opinion nor anyone else's about the .223 for deer. Nor did he ask for smart comments like "being bent on this and not listening" or "a bunch of wounded deer running around NY". What's up with that? At what point did Bob get bent and not listen to advise? I must have missed that somewhere. He is not breaking the law and he seems to be having suceess so why claim that there are a bunch of wounded deer? Why bash the guy? Now I wrote to Bob in a PM about his question a while back. In it I mentioned that the .223 was to light for me and I left it at that. If you are concerned about him using a .223 for deer maybe you should send him a PM yourself instead of changing the subject of the thread or maybe you can start a new thread. IMHO what you did certainly isn't a nice way to welcome a new member.
wtnhunt
Joe, follow along please. Check this thread where several quite knowledgeable folks gave advice http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56210. The user is suggesting that he/she plans to use a marginal at best caliber and on neck shots from what I am to understand, which most of us would agree are not the best shots to take in the first place. Seems to me like a bad idea all together. I gave my advice, please correct me if I am wrong, but this is an open forum where participation is welcomed even when it might not be what someone wants to hear. I am not bashing anyone or anything, merely making suggestions and expressing my opinion, since when did that here become wrong? Really it is funny, because there are a lot of people who feel the same way about the .223, have had discussions here locally with a few people including our game warden and on these forums in the past and usually most people tend to agree that the chances for injured animals will rise with calibers that are not really intended for the game they are being used on. William, I don't dispute what you are saying about the .223 one bit and I said that to Bob. Personally I would never even concider for one second using a .223 for hunting deer. Again that is NOT my point. I am saying that this was a post about the legal capacity of his rifle. This thread has nothing to do with the ethics of using a .223. Now you say that "this is an open forum where participation is welcomed even when it might not be what someone wants to hear." You remember those words now that you are a Mod. You remember those words this fall when a kid posts his first deer and someone who gung-ho QDM posts that he should have let that first spike horn walk. It happens every year and you know it. Typically the QDM poster gets his hand slapped and we all get reminded of thread bashing even though the QDM comments are something someone may not want to hear. You did the exact same thing as the QDM poster. If you want him to stop using a .223 for deer, then send him a PM and share the link with him. Second, don't make incorrect statements like him "being bent on this and not listening". No one got bent, only you did. It was a typical question/answer thread that got an answer and it was done.
