Turkeygirl
So I am planning to go out this afternoon, see if I see the gobblers around and check out the one ridge I think they are roosting by..see if there is any sign. Was thinking about either going back tonight to roost them or go over to my boss' land or the state land by there. Weather forecast for Monday morning is high winds and t-storm so won't be good for turkeys. I'm definitely going to roost birds here at home Monday night. I am planning to hunt here around home as I feel there will be less pressure than on state land Tuesday morning...and there are 3 longbeards running around. Haven't done much on my boss' land or state land there. So tonight... should I try to roost birds here or over by my boss' land? If weather ends up being ok tomorrow orning, I'll go to the boss' land. I do want to have an idea of where the turkeys are on the stateland/boss' land incase things get tough here at home, but my gut lies with the home woods if ya know what I mean... So state land or home land tonight?
dartonman
Always follow your gut....if I were you, and the sun was shining like it is here, I would be out with binoculars looking for where the birds are mid morning....here is my experience with turkeys....Im a huge guy, and not very stealthy in the woods.....I watch from a far, silent, and observant for hours.....watching their "daily" habits as turkey....I wouldnt go in the woods tonite....Id set up where you seen them in the fields before daylight.....if you here them gobble on roost in the dark in the morning, with an overcast day (clouds), Id sneak close to their roost sight....but I always wait for a few gobbles, cause one may roost alone, closer than you think....stay home tonight and dream of turkeys....you should watch them mid mornings, and maybe from a vehicle late afternoon, but I wouldnt get into the woods, I think you may be "bumping" them a bit, and if you do it too much, they will MOVE OUT.........al
Turkeygirl
Well I'm usually working mid-morning like tomorrow...but if weather is ok tomorrow morning, I'll go out and listen here by home before work, otherwise I'll have to roost them tomorrow night. Turkeygirl
Just got in from a little hike. took binocs and a crow call...sunny and warm out but breezy. I skirted the field edges, didn't get any gobbles. Slimbed up a ridge in the woods, had real crows goiung crazy, then there was a lull for like 2 seconds and I heard a gobble! Came from near where I thought they were roosting and where last Sunday the gobblers were headed when I saw them going down the logging road. So I'm changing my plans from going over by my boss' land tonight to sitting up on the gravel pit tonight. I'm psyched!
dartonman
Yep, Id hunt em near or on the logging road...........they follow a pattern if left alone.............you'll be fine, just watch their snood (skin snake on face)....I always let them get as close as they want to come, and when their snood draws up on their face, I know they sense the danger zone....usually at this point they dont remember the last thoughts I just blew out of their heads...lol....I have let them get as close as 1-3 yards....when you can see the hair on their face, go ahead and shoot one for ole dartonman...........lol.......have fun............al
