PA opener.........

Roosted a bird Friday nite. He wasn't exactly where I wanted him to be. But went after him Saturday morning anyways. Iset up along the edge of a long, skinny field with the gobbler roosted across the field & down over the hill a bit........probably 75 yards in front of me. By first light, I was listening to him and about 6 other birds spread all around the valleys gobbling. Very cool!! It started misting/raining about then. I gave him a few tree yelps to which he gobbled back several times. I laid the slate call down and picked up the gun. With a few minutes to go before I expected him to fly down, I turned on the red-dot. 40 minutes and 100 gobbles later..........I see him pitch off the limb and parallel the field edge going to my right. As soon as he hit the ground I popped him with a few quick clucks on the diapragm. He gobbled several times. 45 seconds later I see his white head pop up into the field at about 90 yards. He breaks into a strut and over the next 7 or 8 minutes closes the distance.......never breaking strut and spitting & drumming the whole time. Finally at 40 yards he ran his neck about 1/2 way out of the strut and I squeezed one off. He collapsed on the spot and my 2007 PA season was over.

20 lbs. 9 oz. 10 1/8" beard 3/4" & 3/4" spurs.

Sounds like you had a heart thumping hunt. I'll bet that 40 minutes seemed like lot longer than that. Congrats on a great PA bird and a great trophy hunt too.

I wouldn't exactly say your PA season is over though. Don't you still have the Strutlets available for shooters?

Yep. Had them out last Saturday (my daughter got her 1st and 2nd lesson in "turkey fever" :o ). They'll be hitting the woods with me again this coming weekend, too.

Didn't get a second tag Hoyt. Don't feel like buying into the PGC's greed program. One's enough for me, here, this year.

I see there will be more turkey PA tales to come from the Strut10 ranch. :D Good luck this coming Saturday with the Strutlets. ;)

Great bird strut, I took my Dad on his first turkey hunt. We had 2 longbeards henned up strutting 70 yard away for 20 min. Boy what a show, I think Dad was glad he got out of bed for that one. LOL Lots of hens keeping the boys busy on our property, I'm looking forward to the next couple of weeks. I posted the pic of the bird I called in on the first day of the youth season.

Jeff.
