StillLearnin
In about a month or 2 I am going to buy a ruger single action but I cannot decide on a caliber. I was first planning on getting the 45 convertable that shoots 45 lc and 45 acp. But I am open to suggestions on other calibers. Like the .44 or .4I am trying to stay away from a 357 because I am going to buy a double action revolver in a 357. Things to look for. Ammo Price Ammo Options (bullet type, weights etc.) Recoil I would say about 90 -95 % of the time I will be plinking, but I would also like to use it for deer and hogs at around 20 yards no more than 30 yards. And of course I will be at the range to test fire anything before I buy. So..... What do ya think ???
Jeramie
It would be hard for me to pass up a .44. Ive been looking at them on Gunbroker. WABS
I have both the .44 Mag and the .357/9mm Convertible Blackhawks. The .44 Mag is a hammer, but "new handgun" has good advice about shooting 44 Special ammo when you're just plinking. I have always loved shooting the Rugers. Strut10
In about a month or 2 I am going to buy a ruger single action but I cannot decide on a caliber. As far as versatility, ammo cost & availability and such goes......you can't beat the .44 mag. It's got plenty of power to do what you wanna do. For plinking back off and shoot .44 Specials. They may be a bit harder to find in factory loaded ammo, though. Maybe consider reloading. As for recoil.......well.......depends what you like. The Ruger Blackhawk is not what you'd call a gentle gun with full-boat magnum loads. It generates a lot of muzzle flip and, depending on your hand and grip, can chew you up with the triggerguard and/or grip butt. I'd suggest a set of Hogue grips come home with you the same day as the gun.
RangerClay
Get the .45 LC!! One you can hunt deer with it. Two, ammo it is cheaper than .44mag ammo and it very easy to reload. Three, if you want to get involved with cowboy action shooting ( www.sassnet.com ) you can fit right in. Don't let the OFPG folk fool you. Get a .45LC:cool:
WNY_Whitetailer
I would also opt for the 44 Rem Mag...You can shoot full boat Magnum loads and also pop some 44 Specials in there and shoot the softer stuff...Or, if you reload, you can just reload 44 Special charges into 44 Rem Mag brass. wyote
I would go with the 45 colt in a Ruger SA. You can shoot cowboy loads for plinking and practice. Then you can step up to the custom type loads for some real stompers. Bullets weights can be had from 255 gr to some of the cast 325 gr or even 350 grainers. If recoil is a factor get the Ruger Bisley, the bisley grip really helps with the heavy loads
Jakapr
45 Lc I got the Ruger Vaquero in 45 LC when it first came out. I shot thousands of 255 grain SWC and shot a few deer with them also. It is a blast to shoot and with the heavier loads has less pressure than the 44 mag. My shots on deer are under 35 yds, the doe last year was under 10 yds. the buck was around 35 yds. both were shot with the 255 grain SWC I got a box of 265 grain WFNGC that will be over 1000 fps with my Win 231. That is what I will use next year. The 255 were loaded quite a bit lower, so I limited myself to a double lung shot like I do with the bow, instead of shoulder shots. hangunnr
Well done Jack!! Nothing like doing it old school. No fancy adjustable sights or scopes, just a shooter that knows his weapon....BRAVO!! hangunnr
