On to the next day...

I got up at 4:15am this morning...decided I would sit on a small ridge overlooking a gully/ravine with hemlocks that leads down to the swamp where I see tracks all the time. I heard no gobbling. Sometime after 6am, heard a hen to my left across the gully from another logging trail, thought maybe another hunter, I just assume. I was cold so I made my way back up top to check the gravel pit field, then I went down a logging trail and set up to the right of the swamp on a couple old logging trails below a small ridge, where I heard a gobble the other afternoon. Sat for 2 hours. After the first hour, heard a close gunshot, wasn't sure if it came from the swamp or behind me on the other side of the property. Was kinda sick how close it was but then though "You know what Ruth, enjoy the morning. If God wants to get a turkey, he'll send one your way. It was someone else's turn this morning". Around 8am, thought I heard a gobble come off the ridge above me...So I made my self think positive and after 2 hours went to the open swamp, not know the gun shot did not come from there. Saw no one else's tracks besides mine from the other day...but on a logging trail up above it were fresh scratchings in the leaves and in the swamp big fresh gobbler prints! so that was better news. I did a loop around the back side of the property bordering a grassy field and on the edge of that found a couple feathers and some blood on leaves so someone got one, behind me on the other side, so to me that meant they probably got a different bird, maybe one of the other gobblers that was with this one I'm trying to get. I ended up going back to the swamp for the last hour of hunting time, had a hen answer me back, again, couldn't tell if she was behind or in front of me, I think in front, but I don't think it was another hunter...too later for them at 11am,lol. She didn't come in though so I think she had Mr. Big Boy with her and took him away.

So it may be raining and thundering if I go out to roost later, which if it is, I won't be. My two options for tomorrow morning are:

1. Set up in the open swamp and wait, wait, wait.

2. Set up back on top of that ridge by the gravel pit.

I'm leaning towards option 1 as I don't know when I haven't seen fresh tracks in there, and obviously they must have roosted near there last night. It's also the location where I was thinking I heard them fly down last week. There's a small gully with hemlocks bordering it and a creek bordering a piece with some hardwoods.

If I get out to roost tonight...should I be up by the gravel pit or down by the swamp on a small ridge overlooking it...? What would you do? If it's raining by then, when should I go out assuming they may roost early?

I just checked the radar and I think I've got some time before the rain comes but I don't want to be there in the thunderstorm, lol. Thanks for the help.

I'd lean toward option #1 too. If they are talking about rain, possibly thunderstorms (which means wind) chances are they'll roost low near that swamp you mentioned.

To be honest, if it were me and it was raining I wouldn't even try to roost a bird. I don't do it here at home when the weather is like that. I just go the next morning with where I believe the chances are he'd choose to roost and listen from there. My problem is my hearing is sort of poor anyway and I wouldn't have much confidence I'd hear a bird gobble on the roost in that kind of afternoon weather conditions. They may gobble but I'd have a hard time hearing it with noise made by the rain and possibly any wind to go with it and no chance of hearing wing beats. Anyway you asked what I'd do and that's it. ;)

Thanks Rhino. Yeah, if it is raining and windy, I'll skip the roosting. Might glass the fields up behind my house by chance to see if they are out there, otherwise I'll wait for the morning. Suppose to be nice tomorrow. So maybe after a rainy evening, they'll break their vocal cords in the AM.
