Guest brackett
I havent been turkey hunting but a couple of years but i have spent a lot of time in the woods and watched alot of shows, but my question is, this season the turkeys haven t been calling much at all. i hunted for a straight week and didnt hear much at all. I walked up on a hen on her nest and it was full of eggs. Do turkeys quit calling once theyve layed their eggs? it doesnt even seem like the same place because last year they gobbled their heads off. Its not that they are not in there b/c there is plenty of sign. I asked an experienced turkey hunter who hunts down there every day and he said he thought the weather had them messed up. It had been pretty cold and rainy but now its warming up but didnt seem to make a difference. I would just like some opinions on why they arent calling like they did last year. thanks. toddyboman
Every year is different as you are experiencing. A number of things could factor in: food, weather, hunting pressure, population may be down a bit, gobblers could be all henned up so no need to gobble. Hard to say. Keep at it all it takes is one morning to change your entire season!

Guest bowhunter56
Kinda the same thing here in pa. where i am hunting, a few gobbles in the morning at day break, then quiet all day..
wtnhunt
Dont know, think the factors such as numbers of birds and weather can have a definite effect on how vocal the birds are. Here they were vocal for about the first week of the season, and have been very quiet ever since.
huntinguide
here i believe it was the 30 degree weather we had for 2 weeks of the season, but still they gobbled on the roost "alot". Some years are different they may start 2-3 weeks earlier or latter than last year, remember turkeys dont go by the same calender that we do. But for your question no turkeys talk no matter what. Yelping, purring and cutting are all communication for them.
Matchthedeerslayer
where i hunt turkeys i see them all year but when it came to my season i herd nothig. i got a hen out of her roost but that was it. later in the season about the 3 to the 4th season here in wisconsin i herd more and more gobbles and it was rainy both weeks. and gettin neer the 5th and 6th seasons they usually tend to be hened up but will still be out in the rain. if you ask me i would try a spot and sit there during the middle of the whole season on a wet day with some decoys set up and just start calling you might get lucky and get one who knows. maytom
Here in NY, we had a slow start to the warmer weather for the spring. Hence I feel that it threw off the majority of the mating season a week or two!! Now it seems like years ago, the best times to hunt will be the middle or the end of the month of May, rather than the beginning!! Remember, a Tom gobbles to attract the hen, but if the hens are all around him, the need for him to "gobble" doesn't exist!! These times are what they call the dreaded "Gobbing lull", or for a better term, the mating is taking place hot n' heavy!! Be patient, and things should start picking up shortly!! Now's a good time to recharge your batteries with some lost sleep!!

Actually the birds here were a bit more vocal before the season opened up. For two weeks prior to the opener I sat out on weekends at various spots mornings and a few afternoons calling for yotes, and heard birds gobbling their heads off. Knew about where they were at, but unfortunately had no luck. Season here has just one more week left.
