Turkeygirl
Ever since Monday when I heard that gunshot on the other side of the property and saw sign that someone got a bird, at first I was disheartened then as I sat in the woods I said "God, it's up to you. I trust you that if I'm meant to get a bird, you'll bless me." Well I just got in and guess what....the GPG is roosted aka the Gravel Pit Gobbler! Got up on the top of the gravel pit about 7:30pm..no watch so had to idea what time it was...I'm guessing around 8:30 I thought I heard birds fly up below the pit in the woods...sat there about 10 minutes and GOBBLE! Right below me on a logging trail that splits off and runs along the ridge beside the pit. He gobbled about 4 times then I heard him coming up the trail in the leaves...I layed on the ground, even though I'm up higher than him and there's trees and brush blocking the view. I here him go up on the ridge, he gobbles more....then I here him fly up into a tree...he gobbles several more times....but I did not here the hen fly up...I believe he is alone..and vulnerable tomorrow morning! Now I need some help on how to set-up tomorrow. When he roosted the other day before season...he was down near the trail and then he flew down up on top of the ridge...tonight he seems to be more on top. Should I set-up on the trail below him where he walked up? I think he uses this trail to go out into the field and down into the deeper woods? I could get in fairly quiet but may be close to him...not sure how risky... Or I could come in from the other side of the woods on a trail that intersects the trail he is roosting parallel to..I think he may be facing that direction...open hardwoods..also a smaller hill below the big one he's on. Or do I come in on top off a field...may be a little nosiy with leaves but I could come in right off the field and just sit down... I feel the first two options may be more for his liking but not sure. What do you suggest?? Thanks, I appreciate it and hopefully, Lord willing, I will come home tomorrow with my first bird in 3-4 years...Either way I'll enjoy the journey:)
Marti
Turkeys generally go to higher ground when they come off the roost. So I would probably set up on top on the open field. I would set one hen decoy out and just give him a few soft yelps to let him know I'm there. Good Luck!
Turkeygirl
Well I'll check in the AM and see if anyone else left some good advice, before I go out. Not sure yet how I'll set-up....I could also come off the trail on the other side and set-up on/near a small hill with a logging trail running between it...that I think he might land on...hmm decisions decisions...
