Another PA bird down!

5SHOT

Recommended Posts

Our goal before the season was for my son,dad and I all to fill our PA tags and today our goal was achieved. Saturday my 11 year old shot his first gobbler on his first ever hunt. That will be a day we will never forget. Then on Tuesday I had a nice gobbler fly off the roost right in gunrange for a quick hunt and today just the 4th day of hunting my dad shot a nice two year old.

Today we hunted a spot that we have not hunted in 2 years and really had no idea if there were any turkeys around or where they would be roosted so we set up where we have in the past. We heard our 1st gobble at 5:23am and they kept on coming. There were 4 gobblers roosted on the other side of the pond and when 1 gobbled they all gobbled. There were two jakes trying to gobble on our side of the pond. Everytime they tried they ended with a couple of yelps. There was also one gobbling farther away behind us but it sounded like it was across the road and off the property we were hunting. We got up and started to walk toward all the gobbling. They were gobbling there heads off! Before we got to far I gave a series of yelps on my Butski walnut box call and all 5 gobblers responded. I yelped again and they all hammered back again. We had to make a decision to either stay close to the pond and go after the 4 gobblers or go towards the lone gobbler than was across the road. Originally we decided to go after the four but then we heard the lone gobbler hammer back but we sounded considerably closer. I told my dad I think he is coming so we decided to leave the woods and hug the fenceline and go after the lone gobbler. We started to walk the edge of the field and call every 20 yards or so and the gobbler responded everytime he sounded closer each time. Finally his gobble sounded just on the other side of a stone wall that devided the two fields. Now my dad was set up against a tree and I was laying on the ground because there was no other trees to sit against. I gave a couple of clucks on the box call and he gobbled and hopped onto the stone wall which was about 60 yards away. He was looking all over for the hen but the contour of the field was in our advantage because the field had a steep pitch and he could not see down by us so he hopped off the wall and into our side of the field but now we could not see him either. I gave a couple of clucks and he gobbled closer but to our right. Everytime he gobbled he gave up his postion and my dad would repostion himself toward the last gobble. Finally at about forty yards he peaked over the noll of the hill and my dad squeezed of the shot and our season was completed.

He was a nice two year old with a 9.5 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs..
