The Fullfans Double

Since the day Austin was born 13 years ago I have dreamed of the day we would take a double on longbeards. Well this morning at 0624 we both pulled the trigger within a fraction of a second of each other.

Here is how it went down, Last night I roosted the birds and with Austin off school I knew it would be the best chance we had prior to the weekend hunters filling the woods. We were setting side by side and at 0544 Austin said did you hear that? It was the first gobble of about 50. The birds flew down and with some very light calling, I received a double gobble. Austin just kept looking at me smiling... I think I told him to set still about 147 times, he sure fidgets a bunch. The turkeys gobbled about 65 yds out and I knew we were in for a show. I just hoped that both birds would come together. I whispered to Austin, if they both come "you take the one on the left". About 20 seconds later Austin said I hear something walking. And then I saw the two fullfans coming and then the white heads. I could hear Austin's breaths getting deeper and I could see his gun shaking. I had set out a B-Mobil decoy and they came right at him. I have never seen a gobbler strut like these birds did!!! I asked Austin if he had a shot? He said no. This went on for about a minute. All the time I had my bird in the cross hairs with the slack out of my trigger, waiting fot him to shoot. He whispered " dad I have a shot" I told him to shoot. At the moment his gun roared so did mine. He beat me to the birds and said "we did it" After a bunch of hugs and high fives we picked up and started for the truck. After a short stop at the land owners home to say thank you. We came home to show the girls. I have done a bunch of things in my 43 years that I look back on and smile. But I know I will never forget the sound of my son saying. "Dad I hear something walking".

What a rush....

Oh ya Austins was 23 lbs and mine was only 19. I am never going to hear the end of that one....

Wow I knew you had one down from your post in our team thread, but both you and your son??? A double??? That is truly a moment to cherish! My dad and I hunt together only a few times each year these days and I miss the everyday afterschool hunts from my younger days... Congrats once again!
