western NY bowhunter
Well, my season has started out with some not so great luck. I had two morons come in on me on opening morning, a bird shot out from under me the second morning, missed a big longbeard on Friday and have dealt with several nasty henned up gobblers for the past three days. I did manage to pull a pair of longbeards into range for my cousin Fri. morning. After hens took the 4 gobblers we were originally working away on our first set-up, we headed down below the road after a couple of gobblers that were pretty vocal on the roost. Finally, I got 'em fired up around 8:00 and the battle was on. They were across a small gulley about 100 yds. from us and gobbled their heads off for the next 30 minutes but wouldn't budge. I decided to back off about 60 yds. and proceeded to work them for another 10 minutes. They seemed to be slowly closing the distance on us when a agitated hen showed up on the scene. I started cranking on my mouthcall and struck up a heated conversation with her. After several minutes of this she finally had enough and flew across to our side of the gulley and was coming to lay a butt whopping on me. With this new live decoy on the scene, the two longbeards showed up strutting along the gulley bank right into the path of my cousin's 870 Super Mag and a fat 3-yr. old hit the dirt. It was a awesome hunt with some intense gobbling action. Hopefully, the hens won't be such a pain next weekend and the gobblers will be a little more cooperative. western NY bowhunter
man thats some awesome country there, how big was he? I had to edit all the skyscrapers out of the background in the pics...lol. He ended up being 21lbs., with 1 1/8" spurs and a thick 9" beard (looked like it had some snow damage on the tip). 2labs
Sounds like a Great hunt, I am also from Western NY and I know what you mean about a tough season. Very henned up birds, I dont recall a season so tough, the hens I have seen are very passive as none will get pissed and come in. I live in Conesus, Livingston co. Congrats on the bird, it will be great hunting in a week or so.
western NY bowhunter
2labs, I know what ya mean about the passive hens. All of the ones that I've run into so far, except for the one on this particular hunt, have gone the other way when I've tried calling to them. This bird was taken in the town of Urbana here in Steuben County. That's the "bluff" of Keuka Lake in the background. It sure is some good deer/turkey hunting along the lakes. Good luck in the remainder of the season.

beagleboy
Congrats on the bird. At least someone's having luck in NY. I went out the past two mornings and the gobbblers were not gobbling after they hit the ground. Hopefully next week brings some luck. Congrats again. BKE
Congrats, that is a fine bird. I new that looked like finger lake country, I grew up in horseheads and my daughter works at the track in Watkins. We didn't use to have too many birds way back when so we didn't turkey hunt but I hear the population has picked up pretty good and yours is proof.
