brudaman340
this is my second year huntin in ny for turkeys and no luck yet. i really think that its the calling that were not that great at it and the diaphram is really hard to get down and need alot of practice. i think im going to go out tomorrow morning and see if i get lucky. i was also wondering if you all have any tips or ideas or techniques that work good for you and maybe we could try them and see how everything goes. i really like turkey hunting. the one good thing i must say is every time i went out ive seen birds. toddyboman
You do not have to use a mouth call. Most of the time I use a box or slate. You may want to try a push button they are very easy to use. Each situation is different but sometimes it does not take much calling to call a gobbler in. Just a few yelps and clucks will get the job done. Good luck!!
Ironranger
Todd is right about that. I started using mouth calls first. About 10 years ago I switched to using primarily slate calls and have taken quite a few birds. Over the years of spending preseason in some areas where I could view and hear hens alot along with getting into calling contests with them during hunting, I've learned their different calls and how to mimic them on the slate. I'm not knocking mouth calls at all and I should probably use them more for close calls when you want the bird to perk up for a shot but for me I just enjoy using slates. I've taken a few with box calls too and they are probably the easiest to master.

Once the bird gets in close and my hands are on my gun. Might give the ol gobbler a few clucks to come on in or some sharp clucks to get his head up. But hopefully once he gets in close he sees my decoys and comes on in for some lead pie. Boy I love calling in turkeys.

Guest Blendn
seeing and hearing birds makes the day a little better. i would agree with the prior post. try a few yelps to let the big one know your there. sit and wait , sit and wait. Whatever call you use, have some confidence in it.
