Turkeygirl
Last night was up on the gravel pit listening for birds....saw 3 out in the corn field where I got my jake...2 hens, other one not sure. In another field saw a bird, think it was a hen. Well around 7:45 I hear a distant gobble come from other side of the woods I'm by near a logging trail. I go around the edge of a field andsit on the logging trail. I hear a gobble but it soundsl ike it's almost by this other road off out road. I can hear kids yelling and screaming and playing around, a dog barking with them and gobbling??? I moved towards that way but not all the way since this is on someone else's land but I thought it was weird...no gobbles when owls were hooting, only when the people and dog were making noise....and when I moved towards that area, but not close, I heard a gobble and it sounded still far away like from by the road or something - there are a few houses on it. So I was thinking: 1 - someone has a pet turkey 2 - someone was playing with a gobble call 3 - a different bird then the one I was hunting 4 - a bird, either same or different that was dumb enough to roost by people? The gobbler I've been hunting, I wouldn't think he'd be that close to screaming kids, especially after being shot at by me and bumped the other day off his tree in the morning. I don'tk now how real or not real the gobble calls made sound? I didn't hear him the night before, nor tonight...so it just seems random... What do you think makes sense ?? need2hunt
If I was hunting there with the same background on the property that you have given so far, I would not bother with the mess I heard tonight. To me all that is doing is confusing the issue. I don't know how much time you have to hunt in the mornings but if I was you I think I would just go set up on the field where you killed your jake and sit and wait. huntinguide
a few years ago some people 1/2 a mile down had a pet turkey. It was right next too a section that i could hunt, it was the best locater call, it would start when the roosters did and never shut up.
