Guest Andrea
My Mom took this picture near a river where she lives in Alabama. Dad initially thought it to be a nutria. But after I saw the pic...I realized it didn't have that distinctive "beaver-like" face. This almost looks like a groundhog!!! Anyone???? wtnhunt
Dont know Andrea. Dont think it is a nutria or beaver. Kind of looks like some type of marmot. Either that or maybe a muskrat.

Guest Mountain_Dragon
Definitely a groundhog, marmot, or as we call them here in the Rockies, a rockchuck.
MadHuntinPastor
My vote is on groundhog
Tominator
No doubt in my mind, that's a whistle pig. Ground hog. Makes me want to run for my .22.
Guest Andrea
Groundhogs don't live in Florida. I thought it looked like one too. But after researching a little further.....I think this might just be a muskrat.
Tominator
I thought you said that pic was taken in Alabama? Either way, I'd almost flat guarantee you that's a ground pig. Grizzled fur, orange under fur, claw, nose, eyes, everything about that pic says groundhog.
buckee
Looks like a Hoary Marmot
007hunter
I'm with Tominator. I'd bet my buttons that its a groundhog. Don't think its a muskrat....

Mom thinks whatever it is is domesticated. It isn't afraid of people at all.
MichiganHunter
I think its a ground hog/ground squirrel.....but either way it looks like target practice to me...time to get the old .22 out

stevebeilgard
i've shot a bunch of them, and call them whistle pigs. hoary marmots. taste like chicken... lol
Tom2008
It is definatley a ground hog. Even though they aren't supposed to be there doesn't mean that they can't be. Elk are not supposed to end up in Illinois, but some have made it out there.
wtnhunt
Knew it was some type of marmot. Looked em up in a reference book Andrea, and woodchucks or groundhogs are indeed in Alabama and Georgia tapering down towards the panhandle of Florida. They are around here too according to the book, but never seen any around here.

OJR
Sorry Andrea, but that is a groundhog, marmot or whatever else you might want to call it!
RangerClay
I would bet my paycheck that it is indeed a woodchuck (groundhog). Probably someones pet that got loose. I trapped muskrats for 20 years and it is definately not one of them.
Shaun_300
Nope there's no way it's a muscrat, too fat for one. I pretty much guarantee that's a groundhog.
