Whats better fixed blade or mechanical?

I honestly prefer fixed blades and always will. I like the fixed blades because I'll never have an issue of the blades not opening up. I know the technology put into mechanicals these days makes it really rare for them to not open, but there is always the chance.

Either will get the job done and it is all strictly just preference. Me personally, I like fixed blades and in specific 3-bladed fixed blades, due to them being more aerodynamic in spinning the arrow than 4-bladed fixed blades. The reason I prefer fixed blades over mechanical blades is the same reasons as Tom wrote above. The moving parts on a mechanical blade mean more places for failure and I don't see a reason to make more ways for failure on a shot than what is already present. Mechanical blades have come a long way over the years and failure to open isn't as common, but the chance is still always there. All purely preference on my part, though.

I like Muzzy 100 grain 3 blades. They have been proven for years, fly great, are tough and about 1/2 the price of mechanical blades. I choose to not complicate things when this simple broadhead works great.

Most of the broadheads on the market will do a good job if you put it in the right spot. Make sure you have 100% confidence in the broadhead you choose to hunt with...that's why I use Muzzy. ;)

i pretty much agree with the rest, ive always shot muzzy 4-blades, and they have always flown great for me, and like everyone is saying there is always that chance that a mechanical will not open, more times than none it probably will open, but i prefer the fixed blade were the blade is always gonna be reliable, my muzzy's work great, dont fix it if it aint broken

I'll be the different one here I guess .. :D :D

I prefer and like the Mechanical heads, just due to the fact they take less tunning to be accurate with..;)

I love the Grim Reapers ( http://www.grimreaperbroadheads.com/mainpage.html )

in particular.

This mechanical head will penitrate that tough shoulder bone if need be, and still obatain that much needed lethal penitration. :);)

Like PAstringking I like to use both. It depends on what you're hunting and what you need the head to do. Most importantly, it depends on what your set up shoots well. Not all fixed heads shoot the same, nor do all mechanical heads shoot the same. Shooting them further out than 30 yards really separates the ones that will work for you and the ones that won't. Notice I didn't say good ones from bad. Broadheads are very setup specific. What shoots great for you may be a disaster for your buddy.

In my experience faster bows have a lot more tuning issues with fixed heads than slower ones. Faster than 260fps, fixed head tuning gets tricky. Sometimes a large cutting diameter mechanical is exactly what you need and sometimes a deep penetrating fixed is a better choice.

Don't limit yourself to one or the other. IMO, that's a mistake.

No set opinion here.....

I shoot both. I have had success with spitfires and rocket sidewinders, and use them out of my high speed bow. I have used numerous fixed blade, and currently use magnus stinger 4 blade.

All shoot well out of a tuned bow. It has been argued better flight mechanicals, better penetration with less energy fixed blade. The newer fixed blades I experiment with seem to fly like field points in a tuned bow.

I guess I love the fixed broadhead myself I have really grown to like that Muzzy four blade ... my only problem is carbon or Alluminum :) ... ROFL lol you know someone had to do it:D :p

Every year I bet we have about 10 of these post and every year it seems to split 50/50 and we get the same replies ... its actually pretty interesting to see that it is something that never changes ...

I've used expandable heads for the past 7 or 8 years and hevent found any that wont get the job done. I've used Vortex 2-blade, Spitfires, and now Rocket Hammerheads. I've always wanted the big cutting diameter and field point like flight and have gotten from it all of those heads. Penetration has never been a problem either with complete pass throughs on deer and busted spines and shoulder bone also.

This year i'm planning a trip out west for Elk so i'm questioning making a switch after i do some investigating on the effectiveness of expandables on big game such as elk. Plan on doing alot of bow tuning starting soon with a new string and rest so now may be the time to experiment. We'll see. . . .
