So far, Not so good

The silence continues. I got on a bird sat morn, he was shocking at crows and owls and gobbling on his own but would not answer my calls. After bout an hour, I backed off and let him be, listening to him as I left. Don't understand it. I was 200 - 250 yrds out and he wouldn't answer me. I had no choice but to back off cause I couldn't move in on him cause the woods open up to a thin treed flat atop the hill and I didn't want to spook him. Went in there this morn within 75 yrds of his roost on saturday and all was quiet. No sign of him at all. In fact I didn't here a thing, no hens, gobbles or even fly downs. Don't they usually roost in the same area??? Oh well still got 1/2 the season to go.

How Are the rest of you New Yorkers doing this season? Round has been pretty quiet for me and many others. Birds were going youth weekend and opening day, but have since gone silent. Most likely due to being henned up, maybe a little skittish after being shot at on 5/1. Anybody got any hints or tips for an attempt to harvest a bird in this state? If so I'd appreciate some help.

It has been a bad year here in N.N.Y. for many of us as well. I have heard many birds on the roost but not on the ground. I think I have heard 3 shots all season and 1 was mine. Last weekend the bird I shot never gobbled once. He flew down had his butt kicked by two other birds and worked his way within 41 yards of me after strutting for 30 min. Don't give up breeding is winding down but there will be many love sick toms out looking for miss right now if you can sound like a hot hen to him.

Could the bird you was working from Saturday morning had a hen with him??

Did you call a lot to him or just a little?

If he had a hen he probably is not going to leave her to go check you out until she goes to the nest. If you are able to hunt the mid morning that may be a good time for ya to try.

Something else to remember the natural process of turkeys is for the gobbler to gobble and strut and the hen goes to the gobbler. We are doing it all backwards by wanting the gobbler to come to the hen.

Good luck!:)
