Planted our corn this weekend!!

Recommended Posts

We worked hard the past few weekends and got our corn planted for this years food plots. It is something new that we decided to try and went out and bought this corn planter. It took a lot of hard work to get it in the shape that it is, but my father spent a lot of his free time this past winter taking two older planters and making it into one. After all his hard work we put a fresh coat of paint on it, the planter worked really well. Here is a picture of it.

This next picture is a new food plot this year. It is an rectangle that is an acre big. My father and I pulled out about 400 to 500 trees (that is no exaderation) out of here, it was an old corn field that was growing up for about 10 years or so. When we added this piece of property onto our farm we were not into food plots yet. When I laid the plot out I left 75 feet of brush all the way around it so that the deer would feel safe when in the plot. I helped my father on the weekends and he worked during the weekdays by himself, he is a retired teacher and when I went to visit him during my break from work he would always smile and tell me to have a nice dayat work, he really enjoys rubbing that in haha :D can't say as I blame him. But I keep him busy with my bright ideas!!

Here is a picture of another one of our corn plots, we have a total of 5 different corn plots all over the farm, I have pictures of them all but thought that I had enough pictures to make the dial up guys mad enough already haha :)

Really like the rolling hills in the background there, pretty country. Good the planter is working out well for you. Those plots look good. Thinking seriously about planting a small 1/4 acre or so corn plot here in the bottom where I already have the ground prepped, will either go with corn or with a mix of beans and peas and sorghum again.

My planter is a manual one though, a earthway seeder me pushing it :D. Thinking of rigging two earthway seeders to pull behind the small tractor on a floating frame of sorts.

Oneida man,

My father and I made some changes to our 494-A also that I thought I would share. We took about 9 inches of each end taking the planter from 12' down to about 9'6" so that it would be able to fit in the barn for storage. I circled the part where it was shortened in blue, the same amount was cut off the other end. We also took some of the bracing from the other planter (we got two when we bought this one, one to use and one for parts) which was a newer model and welded it on this one so the frame would not flex as much. It is circled in red

The next picutre shows the planter from the back view, it is 9'6" from one red mark to the other.

We also took the bracing off the other planter that went from the machine to the tounge so the tounge would have even pressure while pulling the planter, the added pieces are circled in red. (By the way we have all the tops for the hoppers we had just taken some off to add seed and fertilizer, and they are not shown in this picture)

My dad is really crafty when it comes to stuff like this, he did a nice job. All of our corn is planted at 30" rows also.

man that looks nice...you guys got a great planter that will last a long time..just be sure to take the fertilyzer augers out and clean and oil them up. DO not get the auger secrtions out of sync when you reassemble it. Do one auger at a time

Thanks a lot for the advice, the planter has been taken apart and cleaned and ready to be stored. The deer should be happy this year :D

Looking good Brian. I'll make up some signs to direct the deer to your place to eat, then they can come back to mine just before dark to bed down in my weed bed, I'll be there waiting for them. LOL!!!!

Good luck,

Lynn

Alright I will send all the does over there as long as you send all the bucks my way :D
