Chrud
NASCAR announced today that the #8 Chevy team has been penalized and fined for rule violations committed last week at Darlington. The #8 team was found to have violated Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules), and 20-3.1.3B (the NASCAR-approved upper and lower rear wing mounting brackets must not be modified to obtain a rear-wing angle of less than zero degrees or more than 16 degrees) of the 2007 NASCAR rule book. Crew chief Tony Eury Jr., has been fined $100,000 and suspended from NASCAR until July 4, 2007 which includes this weekend’s NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge and the next six NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series events. He has also been placed on probation until Dec. 31, 2007. Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., has been penalized with the loss of 100 Championship Driver points. Car owner Teresa Earnhardt has been penalized with the loss of 100 Championship Owner points. The violations were found during pre-race inspection on May 12.(NASCAR PR) AND: Dale Earnhardt, Inc. issued the following statement:“The car in question was a brand new car for the #8 team and the brackets that were found to be nonconforming were built as test pieces before the final design was established by NASCAR. They should not have been on the car and with Tony Eury Jr. away from the track Thursday during inspection, the error was not caught. We do not question the infraction which is clearly spelled out in the NASCAR rule book. However, we have appealed the severity of the penalty.”(DEI PR)(5-15-2007) _______________ That is a pretty harsh penalty, especially for wing mounting brackets. Weren't they changed before the race? I guess those brackets are something teams will have to watch closely on these new gangster friendly cars.
SuperMn106
I agree that was pretty harsh, it is the same penalty waltrip got for the illegal fuel which is worse than mounting brackets in my opinion, but breaking the rules is breaking the rules. Also, the car passed passed pre and post qualifying inspection.

IowaDeerHunter
Well this is the severest penalty yet by NASCAR. Still pisses me off that they put these harsh penalties on ANYBODY not just dale jr. and yet when someone (for example) like Tony Stewart wrecks Kenseth intentionally back during Daytona, nothing happens. This is the first time I have heard of any other violation except for the action detrimental to SCR.
Chrud
Tony Stewart wrecks Kenseth intentionally back during Daytona, nothing happens. I don't think NASCRAP can do much for that. I'm sure it was intentional, but they can't really prove it. Not like when Junior came over the radio at Bristol and said he intentionally spun. Chrud
hey..it's only money!!...LOL The money isn't the issue. That is a lot of points to be penalized for something that had nothing to do with his race performance. It'll be interesting to see if Junior misses the Chase by less than 100 points. VermontHunter
What really bothers me most about DEI's statement as to why those TEST brackets where still on the car is this.... They should not have been on the car and with Tony Eury Jr. away from the track Thursday during inspection, the error was not caught. Since when doe's a crew chief skip pre-race inspection ?? .. I would expect that all crew cheifs would follow thier car through every inspection... Am I wrong on this one ?? As for the point's that Jr. lost ... I have to agree, this one seems quite steep IMO also .. I also think that the suspension was quite harsh also ,,,

BowtechTurkeyHunter
What does it even matter ... I mean he doesnt even care ... if you ask me I think JR will be glad to be done with the team and especially all this petty garbage ... its actually no different then Knause penalty that we all complained about ... matter of fact the only difference is that he used shims and this team just made the brackets so there were no shims other then that same dang thing ... same dang punishment ... oh and who won almost every race while his main CC was out ... yeah it really didnt hurt the team Steve

I dont believe Jimmies was 100 points. I think it was 50. Suspending Eury Jr 6 races is fine by me, but the 100 points is what i think was to over the top. Matchthedeerslayer
i fully agree that he should get penalized!!! And i also think that he should give DEI one more year to see what happens who knows mabye he will wil the nextel cup for all i know. i dont know why they fine different people at different prices its all confusing to me. Valkrie1357
Wow, I think that is Too Harsh!!! Sunday on Pre Race they made is sound like, Oh hum by the way???? No Big Deal at all. He didn't race with 'em, that's what Kills me.
AdvantageTimberLou
You cheat with the COT you will be penalize. Got to set a precedent no matter who the driver is. I applaud NASCAR for this as it will hopefully stop cheating. They did it for an advantage. I heard it gave the car something liek 13 lbs more downforce. DEI may have thought it would have been more but none the less you can mess with the COT and DEI is realizing that!!! You cheat, you pay for it! Sorry DEI!!! Randyman
He didn't race with 'em, that's what Kills me. According to Nascar Now on ESPN, he did race with them. They said they were found during POST RACE inspection, but were missed during pre and post qualifying inspection, which apparently led NASCAR to believe that they were put on after qualifying. According to ESPN, all of the teams were told before the first COT race that any violations such as this would result in exactly the penalties that were handed down. Apparently, Junior's team was playing around with said mounting brackets during wind tunnel testing and "forgot" to take them off before the race. Makes you wonder why the 8 team would even bother testing with un-approved parts if they never intended to try to get away with it during a race. The wings are handed out by NASCAR much the same way they hand out restrictor plates. Looks like NASCAR intends to crack down harder and harder until the cheating stops. Chrud
According to Nascar Now on ESPN, he did race with them. They said they were found during POST RACE inspection No way, I don't buy that. They talked about them on the pre-race show and even pointed out what was wrong. I also agree with Matt,, I watched the pre-race show and they pointed out exactly what was in question... The race hadn't even happened yet .. Something definately is fishy here... I somehow had my head where it didn't belong and misunderstood what was said on ESPN. I didn't see the race, so i didn't know from that standpoint either. MY BAD! BowJoe
well we just can't have Jr. looking good in the spotlight for too long. I wouldn't doubt if Seigel or T-rex themselves didn't have something to do with reporting their own team just to screw with the team of Jr. and Jr. Aw well. I guess it's another bs thing for Nascar to do.
punkinslinger
I heard that NASCAR will allow the #55 team (Waltrip) to break every rule just to see if cheating will help them qualify for at least one race this season!!!!!
Nick
Oh well.....Junior isnt going to do crap until he gets into a decent race team next year anyways. Mediokre teams like DEI arent going to get you a W when you got Hendrick putting cars on the track like they have been.

Only way Mikey will make it is if you hook that piece of crap Toyota to the bumper of a Chevrolet during qualifying or stick a better driver behind the wheel. That will help!! I don't see him making 10 races this year!!!!
Guest HoppeMan
OUCH......Kinda rough on them. 100 points? That takes Jr. out of the top 12 in points, does it not? And that would move someone else into real contention for the Chase. Dale Jr. will have a tough time getting them back Take care, Nathan
